To disclaimer this post: A few years ago, there was a restaurant on Victoria and 49th called Grillzilla. It was a small family run business. We would go for ‘Family Fridays’ on a regular basis and watch the Youtube stream of cake makeovers and tiny food kitchen prep. The reviews were excellent, but they ended up reducing hours - taking out their evening dinner menu - and eventually closing shop in the last year or so. The owner Andy and staff who ran the place were always so kind. I miss those interactions. A few weeks ago, I took this picture Cross & Crows Books (2836 Commercial Dr., Vancouver, B.C.). It was taped to the bottom right corner of their point of sale. Nena was having an anniversary sale early as construction was going to block their storefront in the upcoming weeks. We went when the store opened last Saturday and bought books in support. (They do take online orders as well at https://lnkd.in/g8BVkyPk) I don’t own a small business (nor do I ever plan to in the near future), but I realize how important it is to support our local shops and the people who run them. I maybe have bought one book on Amazon (a used nursing text), but the rest have all been at independent bookstores either ordered online via their website or in store. I want to shout out my favourites. I want all of them to succeed. Behind these small storefronts are people supporting our local community and building community in that process. While I was having my breakfast in the canteen. This new shop attracted me. But unfortunately no customers. It's been 30 min since I was staring at that shop and still no customers. After 35min I found one person buying dosa. I was questioning why is it not working. What's the problem? Then I found this In my observation….. Shop 1: It's a New shop. 1. Well designed. 2. Well branded. 3. Good coloring. 4. A good amount of space. 5. The claim of 5 stars. What do you think? Is everything fine? Okay let me say about the Shop 2: Old shop 1. Not well designed. 2. No Branding. 3. No coloring. 4. No space. 5. No stars. But it is in profit and so crowded with customers… Why is Shop 2 in profits? Well, Even though it has nothing which shop 1 has, it gets more sales. It has 1. Good food. 2. Emotional connect of mother. 3. Seller with good skills and a high voice. 4. Fast Order - Fast serve. 5. Most importantly people are habituated to the food in this shop. most importantly they build trust. ☺ Then naveen, What's the problem with the new shop? - They combined two brands ( No clarity). - No unique selling point. - No emotion only claims. - No seller skills. So this is what I found the reason behind the loss. ME, staring at the new shop for 30 minutes : 👀 Shop owner : 😒 I felt so sad for the new shop owner and workers. Surprisingly the food is good at the new shop. But, I had my breakfast from the old shop ( Cause I was habituated to that shop). Don't miss the key takeaways( writing them in the comments. Ah, the smell of ‘almost’ summer, Christmas decorations filling the shops, the countdown to 25 December, festive get togethers… It can be easy to get caught up in the wind down. The last few years have brought both challenge and opportunity to business, and the coming year will be no different. Interest rates are high, inflation and wage pressures are squeezing margins, and the consumer wallet is pinched. Despite the transition to a new Government, there is still plenty of doom and gloom if you look around for it, and as Cam Bagrie shared at our latest On Point event – an upswing in business outlook doesn’t mean a change in economic outcomes. There are some key themes that I am noticing in business this year that appear to be making an impact. These themes aren’t new, but the economic climate around us is amplifying the results of these behaviors -  Reading the Signs Knowing the numbers, measuring the leads, disciplined reporting. Every business is different, but those that are on top of their sales results, their margins, their overall profitability and their cashflow are equipped to make the best decisions possible. There is no head in the sand mentality, and they monitor the orange flags and make decisions when the flags are red. The Hustle The post covid heat has come out of the market this financial year, with most industries starting to feel some impact. This has meant a combination of less leads, longer conversion timeframes, and lower conversion rates. Businesses that are achieving (and smashing) sales targets are hustling. They saw the signs early, and they hustled. They focused on more calls, more time on the road, opening up new customer bases. They hustled. Most important, they hustled more than the next guy. Courage Pills There is great opportunity for those with an appetite for risk – Cam Bagrie calls it “the fun” being back in business. The potential reward is real, but so is the risk associated with it. I am seeing courage pills taken for two very different reasons, the first to leverage the opportunity and the potential reward that is on the table. The second being to prepare the business for choppy waters. This may involve rightsizing the business, stepping into new markets, trimming the fat. While the countdown to Christmas may be on, there is still time to assess where your business stands on these themes. >How disciplined are you at reading the signs? >How would you rate your hustle? >Is it time for some courage pills?

Who doesn't have a branded pint glass or two from their favorite pub in their cupboard or home bar? The fact is that branded glasses are great marketing. Sitting on your bartop full of that delicious hard-brewed craft beer or lovingly brought home by a passionate customer. Of course, you hope that the glass was paid for - and didn't just walk away on its own- but either way, it's still good marketing.
