✅ Nature Restoration Law gets the green light! The news laws require member states to: 🧑🌾 Restore at least 30% of land and sea habitat from poor condition to good condition by 2030, increasing to 60% by 2040 and 90% by 2050 🌱 Enable 3bn trees to be planted and for action to be taken to ensure there is no net loss in the total amount of urban green space After two years in the making, this is an important step towards protecting and restoring ecosystems across Europe – where about 80% of habitats have “bad” or “poor” conservation status. Our mission statement is to “work to restore the False Creek marine environment in alignment with First Nations stewardship values and marine science, with recognition and respect for the presence and rights of all people to enjoy and use False Creek in sound and healthy environmental ways.” For us, the most compelling path forward is by way of a National Urban Marine Park, because there is precedent and there are evolving models 🌊 Parks Canada describes a National Urban Park as a place to “conserve nature, connect people with nature, and advance reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.” We aim to connect our community and city with the marine environment of False Creek 🏙️🐟 The world has one other national urban marine park – Plymouth Sound National Urban Marine Park (@plymsoundnmp) in the UK. They describe this on their website as: “Forging a new relationship between the city and the sea. Happy World Environment Day 🍃 Since 1973, World Environment Day has been celebrated every year on 5 June to help raise awareness of pressing environmental issues. This year's focus is on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience and is a call for the protection and revival of #ecosystems all around the world. Landmarc is proud to work with the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) to protect the unique ecosystem of the MOD's Defence Training Estate. The Estate covers a wide range of habitats, from peat-based upland moors to chalk grassland and coastal dunes. It comprises 169 SSSIs/ASSIs, some 22 million trees, 70,000 hectares of woodlands and 1,600 hectares of wetlands, all covering around one per cent of the UK landmass.
