Speaking with tomorrow's leaders and sharing how we look on the world’s problems is something I consider crucial. I might not yet be old, but the next generation will deal with quite a few challenges that my generation did not encounter.
One of them is scarcity - of natural resources, of talents, and of geopolitical stability. When such resources become less, tomorrow's leaders need to make tough decisions. And they need to deal with multiple crises at once - from an aging population to increasing national security to climate change. Certainly no easy task to set the right priorities and take the necessary actions.
At yesterday's Leaders of Tomorrow Day, a part of the St. Gallen Symposium, I shared how we at Accenture, as a technology and consulting firm, try to “predict the future” for our clients. Which strategies help to deal with scarcity? What’s the role of technology in doing so? How can you build resilience in a world full of uncertainty? Is a different growth model necessary?
Together with my fellow panelists Ailke Heidemann from ABB and Nina Arquint from Swiss Re, I also talked about why putting sustainability first benefits companies - instead of being a liability - as it can be a major competitive advantage for them.
I also enjoyed the discussions with young leaders on these topics today. Many of them have grown up at a time when sustainability already was on top of the agenda for many companies and governments. They learned from a very young age that dealing with scarce resources is crucial for the future of our planet. They are aware of the need to act - and I love how they think of new ways, such as using technology in creative ways, to do so.
I was also happy to have had Yannick Miller and Céline Kuonen with me yesterday. Céline, who is part of Accenture’s innovation team, talked to attendants about why innovation is often not successful and how scarce resources could be used to innovate better. And Yannick has long been part of the St. Gallen Symposium team and joined our CFO team at Accenture only recently – so for him, it was like coming home.
The Leaders of Tomorrow Day was a great start to the 53rd St. Gallen Symposium which I am looking forward to joining today. Thanks for inviting me once again - and thanks to Martina Fuchs for her great moderation of the panel.
