New season means new plans. Lots of things are happening currently in Zambia. Poor rains, the collapse of the Zambian Kwacha after a two year long height, has resulted in poverty on all levels of society. Where people in the cities have no choice than to find ways to make money to buy food, the people with a small piece of land can grow at least part of it. Unluckily in many parts of the country the rainy season hasn’t started well. The amount of rain fallen so far is lacking and there are fears that this might end up being a lost season for the farmers. Also, the region of the foundation is in one of the regions that lack rains. Therefore, we plan to work on the school garden to teach the people how to live with that. It will mean, use of irrigation, creating water catchment, increasing water retention characteristics of the soil and so on. AM ALPHA supports Clean Drinking Water initiative in Eritrea   For many African rural communities, finding safe drinking water can take a significant part of a family‘s resources. Usually, the burden falls on women and children to collect water, walking a great distance from home. Water drawn from pools or rivers is often contaminated with potentially lethal bacteria. Thus, it needs to be boiled to make water safe to drink.   AM ALPHA supports a project to repair broken boreholes in the Zoba Maekel district in the Central Region of Eritrea, which shows high poverty levels. Community-based organizations own many boreholes and have broken down because maintenance programmes have been poorly managed. This project helps communities renovate their boreholes to deliver clean water and quickly fix breakdowns. The Power of the Little Savings ~ Cultivating the Saving Culture  One of the biggest challenges in the rural communities is their #financialfreedom. Most households find themselves living what we call "hand to mouth" life. The little they earn only matches their basics hence leaving no #savings and so the cycle of generational poverty continues. But think about eliminating such costs like vegetable and kerosene expenses and saving that amount.  Let's do some simple calculations: A standard household in rural Kenya spends Kes 50 on vegetables and Kes 30 on kerosene daily.   With a #kitchengarden, this would translate to about Kes 18,000 for just a year as savings from purchase of vegetables. With a simple #solarlight like one offered by Watts of Love, a household can save up to Kes 10,000 a year from Kerosene. These savings can be redirected to other needs like payment of school fees or healthcare. The savings can also be put in small #investments like buying a goat or some chickens. 🙏 Praying Before Eating: A Rural Uganda Tradition. In our community, praying before eating is more than just a habit - it's a way of life. It's a moment to express gratitude for the food on our tables, to acknowledge the hard work that went into growing and preparing it, and to recognize the blessings in our lives. But for many in our community, this tradition is under threat. Food insecurity and poverty mean that meals are scarce, and the opportunity to give thanks is a luxury they can't afford. That's why our meals project is so important. By providing nutritious meals to those Kids in need, we're not just filling bellies - we're restoring dignity, hope, and a sense of community. When we pray before eating, we're reminded of the power of gratitude and the importance of sharing our blessings with others. Giving back to one’s community is a transformative experience that benefits both the giver and the receiver. The act of selflessly contributing to the well-being of others strengthens community bonds, fosters growth, and instills a sense of purpose and fulfillment. By investing in our community, we become active participants in shaping a better future for everyone. Extreme weather, poor land / water usage and outdated farming practices afflict Malawi’s agriculture sector, threatening the livelihoods of Malawi’s smallholder farmers, who constitute 80 percent of Malawi’s population. Thirty-eight percent of Malawians live below the poverty line, and 47 percent of children are stunted due to malnutrition. Families continue to move out of their rural villages to start a new life in camps for the displaced like this one in #Baidoa. As many as 70 families arrive daily in this particular one. Conflict and #drought are usually at the heart of these movements. These displacements from the rural into towns and cities, has resulted in a population explosion in major towns like Baidoa and Mogadishu, that host the highest number of displaced persons (otherwise known as IDPs). Baidoa alone, hosts at least 650,000 IDPs, spread across over 600 sprawling camps. As I have been hearing from the people and experts ever since I started covering #Somalia, each time a family moves into these camps, chances of them returning are too slim, for varied reasons. Recently read an article that made this crisis all too real…that and I quote: ‘War and drought are emptying Somalia’s countryside resulting in a surge in urbanisation…’ and this is exactly what’s playing out here. A staggering 4 million+ Somalis have been uprooted at least once from their homes and the photo 👇🏾 is just one of the many families representing these stats. What’s more an El Niño alert has been issued for Somalia 🇸🇴 and the Horn of Africa starting Oct, and these families have to brace themselves for possible displacements! Many Ugandans struggle to access basic necessities like food, clean water, shelter, and healthcare. The country faces challenges such as: 1. Food insecurity: Many people can't afford a meal, and malnutrition is prevalent, especially among children. 2. Limited access to education and job opportunities. 3. Poor infrastructure and lack of basic services like healthcare and sanitation. 4. Dependence on subsistence farming, making them vulnerable to climate change and economic fluctuations. Efforts are being made to address poverty in Uganda, including initiatives by the government, NGOs, and international organizations. However, more support and resources are needed to combat this issue. Where do you belong on this chart below?

Violence in #Haiti has led to large-scale population displacement. In Port-au-Prince alone 88k people have left their homes to live in public buildings, schools, church yards or construction sites. The people living on these sites are among the most vulnerable in Haiti. This year, the World Food Programme has already brough well over 500k hot meals to displaced people in Port-au-Prince. But with the rampant insecurity in the capital, delivering tens of thousands of hot meals, day in and day out, is far from obvious. This map shows how the service works: 1-WFP delivers dry food from our warehouse to four central kitchens (in blue) located in relatively safe areas. 2-At these central kitchens, local Haitian organizations cook the meals every day. These organizations also buy fresh ingredients to ensure the meals are nutritious and tasty. 3-The hot meals are packed into biodegradable carboard boxes. Meal boxes are stacked into specially made insulated food containers, are loaded onto minivans and driven to the sites where displaced people live (in yellow), which are located in less secure areas of town. This is how we have brought hot meals to 70k people, more than 80% of the internally displaced people in the capital.
