Missed milestones: Pandemic setback for young learners, recovery efforts needed The pandemic has had a significant impact on young children, with many showing signs of being academically and developmentally behind. Boys have been more affected than girls. The early years are critical for brain development, and several aspects of the pandemic have affected young children, including parental stress, less exposure to people, lower preschool attendance, more screen time, and less time playing. Children from lower-income families and Black or Hispanic backgrounds are the most behind. Recovery is possible, but young children have not been a main focus of federal aid. Parental stress, less exposure to language, and less time playing with other children are some of the reasons for young children's struggles. While we recognise that subjects such as maths, science and reading are fundamental, let us never forget that learning involves far more than that. Learning is not merely the acquisition of knowledge in algebra and chemistry. Learning is also about helping children to grow and learn in relationships, develop emotional understanding and improve their overall well-being. With this understanding, that children are multi-dimensional, Mosaic’s after-school programme strives to strike the balance between study and play (enrichment) for our primary school students. It may sometimes be difficult to explain to parents about the need for such a balance as academics get in the way, but it is a necessary step to implement and enforce for the sake of our children. Amongst other things, this article mentions pupil agency and curriculum reform in schools. These are two things I have believed for a while need to be considered a priority. I have met many children (mostly girls in my case) who struggle with the current school system and their families feel the only solution is to home-school them.
