I snapped this beautiful stand of Radiata Pine, in the wild, in Hawkes Bay, NZ.
The pros column is long, but principally, it is an extremely photogenic species, Iconic.
Radiata pine grows timber and sequesters carbon - incredibly quickly. This allows for radiata to do the heavy lifting financially, and so it may support the cost of and care for, slower growing native plantings within a portfolio.
Radiata is dependable to establish on tough sites, gets above pests and weeds quickly, and quickly closes canopy to protect soil from rain and catchments from flood peaks. Therefore it offers an excellent part of the soil erosion and water quality toolkit, in the right places.
Harvestable in 20-30 years, its owners can choose again what to plant next, and may have a good cheque to support their next options.
It saws, peels, pulps, kiln dries, drills and edges well, receives paint, adhesives and treatment. It machines well and takes nails and screws. It can be stained, heat treated and varnished for beautiful appearance, and holds up NZ's; fences for stock, orchards, vineyards for wine, and builds our homes.
Radiata isn't the best at everything, but it is terrific in many, many applications. It is a pillar of the NZ economy, providing thousands of jobs. We are very lucky to have this species, so well matched to our environment and our requirements.
Swedish industry guests have said - we dream of having a species in Sweden, that would perform like radiata does in NZ.
Visionary introduction of the species led to the preservation of our native forest giants last century, yes it did, because we soon had fast grown timber to use instead, so we owe it a great debt.
Brilliant and versatile, yes. Perfect, no. But right thinking people will agree, Radiata Pine, is surely, truly .... the King of all trees.
