Today, I confirmed a travel feature with a journalist from The Guardian (exciting!) and celebrated the publication of a piece in Forbes with the freelance reporter I pitched the idea to. Between them, these stories will reach an estimated 223 million readers. The interesting thing about both of these pitches is that they were not all about the client. I presented the story ideas and the clients obviously have a starring role, but the travel feature is about the surrounding region and the Forbes piece is about the toll poverty is having on our healthcare system (I do sometimes venture outside of food, drink, hospitality, and tourism!) I love product placement opportunities, client interviews and having brands splashed across the front page, but I really, really like these subtler features as well. When you're part of a larger story, weaved into a genuinely newsworthy piece of work that will be read by millions, the impact on your credibility and brand awareness can be business-changing. It is well worth taking into consideration when you're thinking about how you want to pitch to your chosen journalists. I usually use Linkedin to share client wins and thought leadership - but as a 20+-yr #PRagency owner, I figured I'd pipe in from time to time with some #PR and #editorial thoughts, insights and trends I see from inside my bubble. To kick off - from those of us who rep experts, a couple of things: --It's hard when a writer posts interview questions to the world at large for any and everyone to answer and says "I'll close the query when I have what I need." Quickly providing confirmation that you're interested in our specific expert's feedback is an essential step. Obviously we understand an expert might be cut from a story even when "confirmed," but going out to an expert - especially a busy MD or exec - and asking them to take time to answer questions without first knowing if you're aiming to include them (or if you already have all the quotes you need) is a problem for us agency folk. I know we're all time crunched and this approach may feel like a time saver, but a quick review of our expert's credentials and confirmation that you can include any brand affiliations will ensure both the writer, agency and client get what they need. --Most of our experts are brand affiliated - I know it's annoying. But it is what it is. If you know your editor is going to cut the brand mention from final edit, PLEASE be upfront about this when we ask (we know you don't always know yourself, but if you DO know, please be cool!). Remember that often our brands pay their experts to do media interviews, so when their quotes are used but the brand isn't featured, our client just lost money (and faith in us). #publicrelations #media #mediarelations

We’ve always loved making friends with copywriters and project managers. They have the most interesting career paths. As it goes, they start their careers in one area before pivoting entirely to something else, landing them where they are currently. For some, it’s subtle: an English major, turned editor, turned fashion copywriter. For others, it’s more drastic: fashion design major turned project manager turned head of marketing operations. In the world of multi-hyphenate #creatives, we wonder what it takes to let ourselves extend the boundaries of our dreams, especially if we want to earn from them. Is it necessary to niche down to make a living? Is it too late to change career paths if our competition gets younger and cheaper? Are we putting too much pressure on ourselves thinking about it at all? It’s a heavy topic for a Friday afternoon, sure, and while we don’t have answers we did want to make space for our fellow dreamers out there. PSA I came across a job listing and felt compelled to comment. It was advertised as a "Communications Coordinator" and the list of duties and areas requiring specialized skills was STAGGERING. They included; Copywriting for web, writing press releases, preparation of internal communications, speech writing, script writing, media coordination, photography, videography, video editing, social media content development, social media management, communications strategy, public relations, and on site support for events. This type of position has unfortunately been normalized in many businesses but let's be clear; the above is describing a minimum of three positions and it's likely closer to four. In our industry it has always been a challenge to explain the amount of training, expertise, and experience required to execute even one of these tasks at a high level. There are of course the realities of available budgets and team sizes to consider, but there are always solutions that go beyond stuffing unrelated jobs into one team member who's likely to be overworked, undervalued, and not performing well in any one area. How does being a journalist make me a better Brand Storyteller❓   Continue reading to discover and take away valuable insights on how to use this skill to narrate your brand's story—or even better, to gain a deeper understanding of your target audience. 1/3 👇   Ever since I embarked on this career at the age of 16 (yes, you heard that right, but that's a story for another day), journalism has been my reason to have the excuse to ask questions to strangers without having to knock on their doors, stand at their thresholds without an introduction and say: « Hello, tell me about yourself » (Nobody wants that 😅) I've always been genuinely curious about people; understanding them is something I simply enjoy. (Years of talk-therapy only helped strengthen this, but that’s also for another day).   💡 Lesson number 1 : Ask insightful questions! When meeting people, let's say for a first time during dinner with mutual friends, I begin with the usual small talk, like inquiring about their profession. However, instead of following up with common questions such as « how long have you been in this job? », I ask them: « Are you happy? » Then, I remain silent.   They're often surprised, but it’s interesting - people enjoy talking about themselves beyond small talk. They often rephrase my question: « Am I happy? Well…». Their responses are typically spontaneous.   That's when my husband jumps in saying: « She's a journalist; that's just her thing. » We share a laugh and delve deeper into our conversations, bonded by laughter and the reassurance that I'm not selling them anything. They're not potential clients, nor am I interviewing them for an article—I'm purely interested in their stories.   This approach, which I like to call « L'art pour l'art » (drawing from the 19th-century philosophical movement, roughly translating to 'Art for the sake of art' in English), is something I like to apply with clients or potential clients. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬: PR, comms and wider marketing support to help raise the group's profile and spread the word about who they are and their key achievements to date. You may be surprised who got their career start in advertising. Sir Alec Guinness: yes, way before he was Obi-Wan Kenobi, he was a copywriter. Salman Rushdie: tried to get into JWT, but failed the copy test. He later worked for Ogilvy. Julia Child: she was cooking up ideas as a copywriter well before she made the kitchen her career. Jim Gaffigan: prior to his comedy career taking off, he was a copywriter at Ogilvy. John Hughes: yes, before making films like “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”, he worked at Leo Burnett in Chicago. James Patterson: before becoming a best-selling author, he was a copywriter and eventually a creative director at JWT North America. So, if your current job isn’t bringing you the satisfaction you crave, then maybe try advertising. The AI robots haven’t taken the jobs yet. The industry still needs people who can manipulate a few words into an attention-grabbing headline and people with an eye for how things can jump off a screen, page, or billboard to be the next generation of art directors.  You never know where it might lead.
