The consumption and production of animal proteins is a significant driver of climate change, public health risks, and nature impacts. Diversifying away from these protein sources is not only a lever to reduce these negative impacts but is also a market opportunity. The FAIRR Initiative has just completed the first phase of its Protein Diversification engagement which encourages 20 of the largest food retailers and manufacturers in Western markets (where animal protein consumption is the highest) to diversify their protein portfolios to more sustainable alternatives 🌱 Phase 1 of the engagement was supported by 66 investors, representing more than US $10.8 trillion in combined assets. Continuing our recap of the Alpro Foundation symposium at 14th European Nutrition Conference (ENC) FENS 2023 with our expert speakers sharing their evidence-based highlights on the "Impact of incorporating plant-based alternatives into the diet" 🥛🌱 Our third speaker is Laura V., a Senior Manager in Food and Agriculture at the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, which brings together transformational organizations to form a global community aiming at accompanying the required food system transformations . Laura’s presentation on ‘opportunities and challenges for scaling plant-based meat and dairy alternatives as a part of sustainable and healthy diets’ emphasized four action areas as key steps towards achieving sustainable and healthy diets with plant-based alternatives. The four actions were: 1) strengthening evidence on the impacts of analogues, 2) ensuring a just transition for consumers and workers, 3) promoting behavior change, and 4) establishing innovative business models.. Media campaigns could be one tool in our toolbox to encourage Americans to adopt or maintain plant-rich dietary patterns for human and planetary health and well-being. Yet we don’t know enough about the landscape of media campaigns that support or discourage sustainable diet transitions! Our recent systematic scoping review identified 84 media campaigns that encouraged or discouraged red and processed meat products and promoted plant-rich dietary patterns and traditional and novel plant-based proteins to Americans. Dr. Mitch Kanter, GDP Senior Technical Advisor, spoke last week at the American Dairy Products Institute (ADPI) Global Ingredient Summit in Reno, Nevada. Dr. Kanter’s presentation was entitled The Importance of Protein Quality in Healthy Sustainable Global Diets. Among other things, he discussed the recent completion of Project Proteos, a multi-year, multi-research center study spearheaded by GDP, whose aim was to develop a better, more biologically relevant method for measuring the protein quality of foods. Dr. Kanter mentioned the importance of protein quality in light of data indicating that one billion people globally do not consume enough protein, and the still rampant rates of stunting and wasting among children in many developing countries. Kanter indicated that the inclusion of high-quality protein containing foods in the diet promotes efficiency in nutrient and calorie delivery and absorption, which has implications for land use and the quantity of food we’ll need to produce to feed a growing global population. Because efficiency is at the heart of sustainable eating, Kanter indicated that greater consumption of high-quality protein foods is a key factor in consuming a sustainable global diet.
