Today we mark #WorldWaterDay 💧🌍 Water is a precious resource that should never be taken for granted. According to the United Nations, an estimated 1.8 billion people will be living in areas with an absolute scarcity of water by next year. At the European level, water scarcity and droughts are becoming more frequent and widespread. The increased focus on water resilience and management in agriculture at policy level highlights the gravity of the issue. This includes the longstanding #WaterFrameworkDirective and the more recent #WaterReuseRegulation which aims to encourage and facilitate water reuse in the EU. Beyond this, the #WaterResilienceInitiative, which is currently on hold, is another indication for the broader need to address the increased threat of water scarcity in Europe.  At Grodan we recognise that agriculture has a big role here, with over 70% of freshwater being used for agriculture. Controlled Environment Agriculture (#CEA) tools are part of the solution, helping growers use water more efficiently, and avoid wastage at the same time, with savings up to 50% compared to open systems.

💧💧💧World Water Day💧💧💧 70% of the world’s fresh water is consumed by Agriculture, and it’s the main water pollutant. Which means, that if we focus on treating Agricultural wastewater, we can move the needle!! What is in AgWater? Nutrients! From fertilizer and animal waste. This nutrients end up in our ecosystems, killing life. Costing the global economy over $1.5 trillion annually, on its impact on human health and ecosystems. We need to fix this. At MicroTERRA, we clean water by growing an aquatic plant called Lemna. Lemna grows fast, absorbing large amounts of nitrogen from Greenhouses. We then upcycle and transform Lemna into functional and sustainable ingredients for the food and beverage industry. Our first product, is Flora. Today, as we commemorate Earth Day, let's reflect on the profound significance of our planet's health for food security.    In Root2Res we develop novel tools for root traits assessment, a key enabler for crop resilience. Despite some improvements, water pollution remains a key environmental challenge across the EU and globally, with #agriculture being a major contributor to high levels of nutrients such as nitrates and phosphorus, and pesticides. A research from University of Reading highlights a concerning trend: air pollution disproportionately affects vital pollinators like bees and butterflies, reducing their ability to forage by 39%. This poses a serious threat not only to these crucial creatures but also to our broader agricultural systems and food security. As pollinators struggle against pollutants that leave pests unscathed, the call for stricter air quality regulations becomes more urgent to safeguard our environment and ensure the sustainability of our food supplies.
