Every year, more than a billon animals are killed for their flesh and skin. While most people associate leather with cows, the reality is that many different animals are killed to make leather. Leather is made from the skin of animals – once an animal’s skin is removed, it must be preserved through a process called ‘tanning’, which uses strong chemicals to prevent the skin from decomposing. A wide variety of animal species are killed to make leather — most notably cattle, but also pigs, goats, sheep, crocodiles, snakes, sting rays, seals, rabbits, emus, deer, fish, kangaroos, horses, cats and dogs. But are buyers aware of what's happening behind the cute photos of fluffy furballs? In August 2023, the Department of Rural and Community Development released statistics for 2022: ⬆ 7,352 dogs entered Irish pounds, a 77% increase from 2021. ⬆ 340 dogs were euthanised in Irish pounds, twice as many as 2021. ⬆ In 2023, Dogs Trust recorded the highest number of surrender requests (3,968) since it opened its doors in 2009. ⬆ The number of dogs rescued by the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA) rose by 47% last year when compared to 2022. So rescues work with certain shelters…some only take small or breed specific. Some don’t take behavior dogs or sick dogs listed for pre euthanasia, but if they seem perfectly healthy try anyway. Holds are being shortened. If you don’t agree then sign petitions and get involved. Nobody wants to see a healthy dog euthanized, and it’s shocking that it’s happening. Fosters don’t happen out of thin air, reach out to your company, and Highschools and active senior facilities and anyone who can help. When a shelter is in a no man’s land? Create a lifeline. Safety is no Accident

Become sponsor to a rescued dog from China's "Dog Meat Farms" Under the motto: “offer help instead of presents" this Christmas can be different! It’s in your hands😉 Think less about material gifts and more about where we can help each other to create a better world🐕 A friend from Italy, Chiara, lives in China and rescued a dog named Doris from a "dog meat farm" there years ago. Doris gave Chiara hope again, helped her through a very difficult time and also saved Chiara, so to speak. Yes, that's what animals are like, they save you with their love and gratitude! Doris passed away a few months after she was rescued and Chiara promised to save as many dogs as possible from these absolute horror farms in Doris' name. Together with many volunteers, Chiara founded the DORIS WAS NOT MEAT association to give freedom to many animals who were unlucky enough to meet the wrong people. DORIS WAS NOT MEAT is a charity that uses the money raised to rehabilitate dogs rescued from meat markets. These dogs are then matched with people who need love and companionship, because just like Doris, a little dog can have a big impact on a person's life. So this association brings together several of my favorite projects: dog rescue and trauma healing. Chiara and her team have come up with something very special: a collection of photos of over 200 of the 1,400 dogs from the XiaoQi shelter near Chongquing, whose photos have been transformed into works of art with the support of KI.
