On Tuesday, some of our students organized a protest in solidarity with the Palestinian people and urged the college to consider how our actions or lack of action reflect on the UWC mission. Students also expressed a desire for a more open conversation about global issues. Students expressed their grief and despair upon seeing the devastation experienced by civilians, the destruction of medical facilities, and the evolving humanitarian crisis. As a college, we believe in the power of our students and their activism, and we are proud of their engagement with humanitarian issues. With 200 students from over 90 different countries represented here on campus, world events always feel close to home. As we write this, one of our current students, Aya, and a graduate from last year, Dima, has their family in Rafah, desperately seeking to get out. To my friends, colleagues, and broader LinkedIn connections, On October 7th, our lives, our reality, our present and future were forever changed, when over 3000 Hamas terrorists infiltrated Israel, slaughtered 1400 of us - babies, children, elderly, women and men. Since then, the Israel Defense Forces, the MOST MORAL ARMY IN THE WOLD (by a landslide!) has been fighting the most just war, probably since WWII. 300,000 soldiers were called up to reserves, young men and women, ages 21 to 40 and beyond, put their lives on hold and have been working day and night to rid this area of the world from terror and ensure our people - and the entire world - a better future. The world "continues to turn" for the rest of us - you, me, anyone who is not entrenched between the enclaves of terror or deployed at the rest of our borders to protect us from the continuous threats from our neighbors. But for these brave reservists, everything is stuck in time. Eventually, on "the day after", they will return home to babies who have doubled and tripled their age without knowing their parents, spouses and parents, who have lived in agony while waiting for some sign of life from their loved ones, and a world that hasn't really changed, while they are not the same - in any way - as on the day they left. These brave men and women who are out there protecting us are bound to return home as heroes. But they need more than just moral support. And while there are many amazing initiatives to raise money for various causes, I would like to pass on to you one that is close to my heart (and my job). Bar-Ilan University has started a fund to collect money for scholarships to give to our students who have had to leave their studies and lives to join the IDF in the battle for our future. 2023 was a challenging year, especially for the children of the world - in Ukraine, Afghanistan, the Middle East and in so many regions of the world. As Canadians, today is an incredibly important day. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a day for all of those who call Canada home to reflect on how we can move forward on a foundation of truth and reconciliation.   Several Acuitas team members are participating in an intergenerational march at the University of British Columbia today to commemorate Orange Shirt Day.   The march aims to be educational and supportive to the Indigenous community on campus and beyond. Educational activities will allow younger participants to connect with the original inhabitants of the land and plant a seed to continue these conversations of a difficult era in Canadian history at home.   Today is important day for many reasons, including that it is a reminder that we – as Canadians – must acknowledge this painful chapter of our history so that it can help us to have the important conversations and to take real action for reconciliation, cultural preservation, systemic change and healing. Celebrating Two Years of Kaaj Education: A Journey of Resilience and Empowerment Around two years ago, in the wake of a devastating attack on an academic center in the Hazara community area in the west Kabul, which tragically claimed the lives of over 50 students and left more than 110 wounded, a spark of resilience ignited within us. It was a moment of profound sorrow but also of unwavering determination. We, at Kaaj Education, emerged from the ashes of despair to stand in solidarity with the victims and our community during those darkest hours. Our mission was clear: to salvage hope from tragedy and to offer opportunities for a brighter future beyond our borders. We aimed to transform grief into action, focusing on the empowerment of women through education. By designing educational courses, reaching out to our global networks including universities, friends, and faculties, and self-financing much of our operations, we sought to carve out a path of knowledge and freedom for those most affected. Today, we are incredibly proud to announce the launch of our official website and social media pages. This milestone is not just a testament to our commitment but also a platform to amplify our advocacy for the safety and education of Afghan women. The world might have moved on, but for 8 million innocent girls in our community, the struggle for freedom and education is a matter of life and silent death. At Kaaj Education, we refuse to forget. We stand firm in our resolve to take action, to support, and to educate. We are a testament to what a community can achieve when united by a cause greater than itself. According to the Network Contagion Research Institute, approximately 200 colleges and universities in the United States did not disclose information regarding $13 billion + in donations received from foreign governments during the years 2014-2019, with a significant portion of the funds coming from authoritarian regimes. The highest amount of undisclosed contributions came from Qatar, amounting to over $2.7 billion. It is worth noting that Qatar is home to the leaders of #hamasisisis, who hide there. Some other countries that made significant contributions include China with a donation of $1.2 billion, Saudi Arabia with $1.08 billion, and the UAE with $431 million. Hundreds of colleges accepted donations, with Carnegie Mellon at $1.5B, Cornell at $1.38B, Harvard at $895M, MIT at $521M, and Yale at $496M. The report highlighted a correlation between accepting foreign donations and increased on-campus antisemitism. Universities that accepted donations had 300% more incidents of antisemitism on average than schools that did not. And now you ask yourself why the Presidents of the #UniversityofPennsylvania, #Harvard, and #MIT could not openly condemn antisemitism on campus and admit in a congressional hearing that calling for genocide and the extinction of Jews violates their code of conduct and their universities’ policies on free speech. Most of us may take getting an education for granted, but that's not the case for everyone around the world. Today, on hashtag #InternationalDayofEducation, we reflect on helping those who find getting an education a challenge due to remoteness, poverty or war: ✅ Tackling education inequalities in South Africa’s townships – Our Ambassadors for Good programme mentored 70 students, resulting in 94% of those young people going on to university.  ✅ The Crescer Programme around our Minas-Rio operations in Brazil, focusing on youth empowerment and employability skills targeting 4,000 young people aged 16-35. ✅ Youth development initiative in Moquegua, Peru, focusing on improving employability, having achieved a 75% success rate. ✅ Children fleeing the war in Ukraine who have had their education severely disrupted are benefitting from a $1 million grant to The Salvation Army, who are helping refugees across Europe with basic facilities.
