This past Wednesday, FBMS staff Jonathan Lanham, MSW, FBMS' Chief Operating Officer, Kate Fulton, FBMS' Director of Program Development, and John Yazwinski, FBMS' President & CEO, participated in the New England Homeless Summit hosted at Assumption University. The summit convened over 250 experts, including federal officials, Washington-based politicians, local legislators, and numerous regional service providers representing New England. The engaged audience attentively listened and actively contributed to formulating solutions aimed at addressing the escalating housing crisis. During the day-long conference, John Yazwinski took part in a panel discussion centered on the importance of developing strong partnerships. The dialogue revolved around the necessity of coordinating and communicating effectively across local, state, and federal levels to allocate resources, establish priorities, and devise collaborative solutions to address homelessness. Sean Glennon from the City of Quincy Planning Department and John Yazwinski participated in the panel, exemplifying the significance of our collaborative relationships. Special thanks to Rhonda Siciliano and HUD for organizing the summit and Juana B. Matias, HUD's New England Regional Administrator, for hosting the summit. https://lnkd.in/gxDiSNxq #NobodyShouldBeHomeless #HelpFBMS

National and local leaders are working to mobilize us all to act against inequitable systems that are preventing us from achieving the abundant housing future we know is possible. An overwhelming 1,000+ organizations and leaders from across the country have filed more than 40 amicus briefs in support of Gloria Johnson and the rights of people experiencing homelessness in the landmark case going before the Supreme Court on April 22. Among these leaders are our partners at Funders Together to End Homelessness , National Alliance to End Homelessness, and Enterprise Community Partners, who are lighting the way by equipping the field with the solutions communities should continue deploying over the long haul to support people after the Supreme Court hearing. Now is a critical moment for all of us. We have the chance to use our CaseMaking skills to ensure everyone sees their shared stake in the two futures created in this moment. 📃 Read the brief from Funders Together, NAEH, and Enterprise Community Partners here: https://lnkd.in/gztVPRBY 📄 See the full list of amicus briefs here: https://lnkd.in/dz-kXDyd 📕 Review the CaseMaking playbook we created in partnership with NAEH here: https://lnkd.in/e9Gu6eBj

Our Executive Director, Michele Conderino, had the wonderful opportunity to deliver a speech at the NAEH Conference in San Francisco, California this week. The conference was a great platform, where several insightful speakers shared their ideas and strategies to tackle homelessness. One of the most enlightening discussions held at the conference was on "5 things to solve homelessness", led by Tomiquia Moss, Secretary of California's Business, Consumer Services, and Housing Agency. These five things provide a constructive and achievable roadmap to address homelessness: 1. Fostering the belief that solving homelessness is possible by listening to experts and investing in proven solutions. 2. Increasing the availability of affordable housing. 3. Recognizing housing justice as a critical component of racial justice. 4. Making simultaneous investments in Prevention, Interim Housing, and Permanent Housing to achieve positive outcomes. 5. Building political will and public courage to address homelessness. By implementing these 5 strategies, we can work towards a society where everyone has access to safe and affordable housing. #NAEH2024

Spent the past few days in San Francisco🌁 for the National Alliance to End Homelessness 2024 Innovations and Solutions for Ending Unsheltered Homelessness conference. Nearly 40% of the more than 1,200 attendees were from California, but we were able to hear about unique approaches from both across the State and the nation. In this field — success looks like sharing and collaboration🫱🏾🫲🏼! And at LA Family Housing, we thrive on working in coalition because we believe “if you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” Conference Takeaways: 1️⃣Ending homelessness is possible. 2️⃣Building more housing is key. 3️⃣Elevating lived experience is necessary. 4️⃣Housing justice is racial justice. 5️⃣Budget advocacy is a must. 6️⃣And going it alone is selfish and deadly.

At Hubbell, our small but mighty team participates in a book club, which allows us to have meaningful conversations about issues we all care about. AND I LOVE IT! Our latest book was "Homelessness is a Housing Problem," and yesterday we concluded our book club with a team discussion with the author. VERY COOL! This book argues that more than mental health and/or substance abuse, the main factor for homelessness is our housing shortage. Simply put, we need to focus on building more housing of all types including rental apartments, duplexes, ADUs, townhouses, condos, subsidized housing, and market-rate housing for people at all income levels. To do this, we need to make it easier and cheaper for home builders to do what they do: build homes. This means upzoning our city and cutting regulations that slow down the rate and increase the price of development. Prioritizing housing and homelessness means that Seattlietes will have to make sacrifices and accept that change is inevitable. We may lose some street parking, and our neighborhoods are going to look different. But that’s what living in a major metropolitan city is all about! What are your thoughts? 3, 2, 1, go!
A big thank you to Gregg Colburn and University of Washington for hosting our team in Seattle this week for an in-depth discussion of housing and homelessness. Gregg's research is fascinating - and challenges a lot of the popular narrative and assumptions about homelessness. It's a great read for anyone working to make progress on the myriad issues connected to keeping more people housed in our communities. We encourage you to attend today’s County Council’s Affordable Housing Ad Hoc Committee at 5 PM at the Committee Meeting Room located at 301 University Ridge. You can also watch over the livestream from the agenda: https://lnkd.in/e2MS8D4a. Our partners LiveWell Greenville, Unity Health on Main, Greenville County Schools, and Loaves & Fishes Greenville are presenting. Thank you to Greenville County Council Chairman Dr. Ennis Fant, Sr. for your leadership of this committee. As a collective voice for people experiencing homelessness and those working to eliminate homelessness, we are fiercely committed to addressing policies and system-level change that align with our mission. Our vision is that our community will work together in Greenville County, ensuring safe, affordable housing for all with access to everything needed for a healthy and fulfilling life. As noted by Matthew Desmond, author of “Evicted” and “Poverty by America” when housing that is safe, and affordable is not accessible the rent eats first. He says, “By and large, the poor do not want a small life. They don’t want to game the system or eke out an existence; they want to thrive and contribute. Our cities have become unaffordable to our poorest families, and this problem is leaving a deep and jagged scar on our next generation.” #gvlhomes4all #greenvillesc #collectiveimpact #housingishealthcare #foodsecurity
