The other day someone spotted I was eating a pot of porridge - in the afternoon. They: Are you having a porridge? Me: Yes. They: But it’s afternoon. Me: And? They: Porridge is for breakfast. Me: You can eat it whenever you want. They: But that’s breakfast. Me: Says who? This short conversation fired up my brain with many topics, I could go on why people don’t eat chips for breakfast, but have hash brown (potato potahto), but I’m more curious about why people don’t look beyond conventions. Some say the way you do anything is the way you do everything. If you tend to think outside the box at work, you’d do the same in your personal life. Or the other way around, if you accept the “we’ve always done it this way”, you won’t question social norms or traditions. I recently finished reading the book "Who Moved My Cheese". It is a short and simple book but one that has great teachings. Here are some things I got from it: In the book you learn about cheese. You can interpret cheese as anything. Anything we love, we are passionate about, we want, hope for, and even our own beliefs. Nothing is certain in life, and unexpectedly, we might run out of our "cheese". When things don't work as we wanted we start to worry wondering if there is any good out there for us, if there is some good cheese for us. We all know we need to find new "cheese", but for some reason we still yearn for that old good cheese we had, but I fear that by doing so, we lose opportunities to try a new one with different flavor, and even better. “Old beliefs do not lead you to new cheese”, the book says, and I have realized that is true. If we want new cheese, we need to grow and get rid of old beliefs.
