#Figureofthemonth ⚡ Fraunhofer IZM and its project partners have developed the ASTROSE® monitoring system to increase the line potential of high-voltage and extra-high-voltage lines and simplify their maintenance and monitoring. At the heart of the overhead line monitoring system are energy-autonomous wireless sensors. These measure the inclination and torsion of the cable and the current strength and transmit the data to the grid control system via radio. Based on this data, grid operators can draw important conclusions about the transport capacity of overhead lines and also about potential hazards such as ice loads, cable breaks and earth faults. "Metamaterials for Ambient Health Sensing on Passive Surfaces" This study introduces a technique leveraging metamaterials to convert passive surfaces into highly sensitive health sensors for ambient monitoring. Metamaterial textiles facilitate near-field interactions between wireless signals and the body, enabling contactless and interference-free sensing. Functionalized passive surfaces offer hours-long cardiopulmonary monitoring with accuracy comparable to gold standards. Additionally, distributed sensors and machine learning show promise for continuous blood pressure monitoring, unlocking the potential of passive surfaces for ambient health sensing.
