Climate Tech & Policy

Back from three extraordinary days at the #BESummit24, organized by Breakthrough Energy in London. It's difficult to summarize the many insights gained from numerous panels and spontaneous discussions in just one post. It was encouraging to see global leaders agree on the need to scale #climate solutions to generate real #impact, bridging innovation with industrialization (which, by the way, is what Cleantech for Italy is all about). The event started in the best way possible, with a showcase of leading cleantech startups from BE's portfolios. Italy was very well represented by Energy Dome - congrats Claudio on the inspiring speech! Here are some key highlights from the panels: 📈 Bill Gates discussed the origins of BE and emphasized the importance of human ingenuity for progress on a large scale. I also appreciated Eric Toone's warning: there's no easy route to success in scaling cleantech champions. 📃 Mario Draghi made it clear that #governance is key to unlocking the required resources to make climate solutions scale. This is a call to action for ambitious and mission-driven policymakers. ☀ Senator John Kerry pointed out that the shift to cleantech is already happening at scale and is inevitable. Policy measures such as the IRA are not at stake, regardless of who will lead the US in 2025. 📐 Legendary cleantech investor John Doerr (who was kind enough to chat and take a pic with me and Leonardo) stressed the importance of clear and measurable objectives, some of which go beyond technology. (He actually said much more, but that requires a separate post.) 💰 Rondo Energy's Eric Trusiewicz announced the successful closing of a new funding round with Breakthrough Energy and the European Investment Bank (EIB) to fund three heat battery facilities in Denmark, Germany and Portugal. As always, a warm thank you to Julia, Alberto and the whole Breakthrough Energy team. Being there was nothing less than a privilege. Not least, it was great to meet again (or for the first time!) people working on these challenges across Europe like Jules, Sarah, Bianca, Tobias, Magnus and Kädi!
