Who will finance the missing middle for cleantech? "The missing middle" happens when companies are no longer start-ups and enter the scale-up phase. They are not yet mature and need to build many basic company functions while working hard to secure their revenue and their position in the market. Scale-ups are important for the economy: they create jobs and tax revenue. They are also crucial for the green transition, since many of the solutions we need depend on innovation. But in this phase, their starting capital or "seed capital" often runs out, while revenues are still not stable enough to allow them traditional bank loans. Yesterday, I attended Cleantech for Scandinavia's event Nordic Cleantech Scale Up Financing, addressing this problem. Speakers were, among others, Trond Moe Managing Director of Nefco - the Nordic Green Bank, specializing in financing this missing middle, and Mala Valroy from Industrifonden, reminding us that financing clean tech innovations is not just an opportunity for investors. It's also an urgent task to save us from global warming. I managed to get a photo together with Julia Reinaud, Senior Director at Breakthrough Energy and our excellent moderator for the day, and Magnus Brandberg, Chair of the Board at Baseload Capital, where I work. A Nordic scale up fund was discussed during the event and I am hoping for it to become a reality. Thanks for a great event, Magnus Agerström and Eva Andersson! Small businesses and mid-caps drive this sector, with the EU single market being essential for bringing their inventions to life. Germany and France are innovation hubs, but globally, the US, Japan, and China are major players, especially China, which has seen rapid growth. On Friday, Sofia Karagianni and I had the pleasure to present Cleantech for Europe's latest report, A Cleantech Investment Plan for European Competitiveness to Kurt Vandenberghe, Director General at the European Commission's directorate-general for Climate Action, and his colleagues. It was great to dive deep into how to finance the scale-up of cleantech manufacturing in Europe. We touched on the urgency of expanding the wind #publicguarantees to electrolysers, LDES and other strategic cleantech manufacturing, how to crowd in institutional investors and the role of ETS revenues to de-risk cleantech industrialisation across Europe, in particular by making the Innovation Fund easily accessible to #cleantech #scaleups #SMEs. The EU is gearing up to focus its next mandate on investment and competitiveness. From the stock-taking of the Clean Transitions Dialogues from EVP Maroš Šefčovič, to Enrico Letta's report and the latest European Council conclusions, we note the growing focus on targeted de-risking, maximising public money with tools like public guarantees instead of blunt subsidies. Now it's time to bring these instruments to life and get them funded.

How can politics and the private sector come together to boost Cleantech? That was the topic for discussion at the recent Australian Cleantech Spotlight in Canberra, which Allegro's Thomas Nann attended and presented at, with several other industry experts, including Brian Craighead of Energy Renaissance, Tim Harris of Redflow, Dominic Spooner of Vaulta, Justin Bain of 3ME Technology, and Katharine Hole of the Australian Battery Industry Association. Some of the key insights that came from a very productive and forward-thinking discussion included: - The need to support startups and scaleups financially - Create stronger incentives to bolster the market - the IRA's efforts in the US might be a good guide here. - An acknowledgement that demand is not the problem, but rather supply and manufacturing. With senators Karen Grogan, Andrew Bragg and David Pocock attending, it is clear that the government is taking this seriously, and we welcome the ongoing engagement to help this critical sector thrive. This startled me yesterday at the #InnovationFund Cleantech Conference. A poll among participants revealed that 77% of the participants present & online thought we need to focus on scale up , rather than on research and development. I conclude that for succeeding the clean transition, we have what it takes in technological solutions. Now it is time to take it to the market ! Of course, as always, it is a question of supply and demand for such new decarbonised solutions. The scale up phase is fragile . For two reasons mainly : execution risk and market risk. This is where public derisking can come in . It is true that this is not entirely the focus of our current EU budget. But still : we need to work on this. With @EU Business: ✔️we need to provide more funding support to our European clean tech industry to scale industrial production in Europe. With increased funding needs, the current EU budget (2021-2027) has insufficient possibilities for supporting objectives of the #Net-Zero Industry Act (#NZIA) and clean industrial transition, relative to the identified public investment needs. It is estimated that a total of up to 0.4% (or EUR 8 billion) of the EU budget could be activated to support clean industry scaling-up needs. ✔️We need to mobilise more European capital to close the scale-up gap and that is why we launched the new European Scale-up Action Risk Capital (#ESCALAR) Programme, implemented by the @EIF, by leveraging #InvestEU resources, to create a new asset class which would allow institutional investors such in insurance companies and pension funds to engage. ✔️We need to ensure that supply and demand can meet, that is why the Commission created the European Hydrogen Bank (#hydrogen bank) as a financing instrument to accelerate the establishment of a full hydrogen value chain in Europe. ✔️On a temporary basis, the Temporary Crisis and Transition Framework (#TCTF) offers possibilities for EU Member States to support investments in clean tech manufacturing. This week, I embarked on a new journey with Cleantech for UK, an initiative driven by Cleantech Group and supported by Breakthrough Energy . It’s an exciting and challenging time to be working at the intersection of policymakers, innovators, and investors, especially as the UK's new political landscape and climate priorities converge. With the government demonstrating a clear intent to introduce new policies and strengthen existing ones, there's a unique opportunity to explore innovative strategies for increasing investment in UK cleantech. However, the current capital markets are somewhat fragmented, posing significant challenges to these efforts. A major issue is the availability of funding, particularly for venture capital and growth-stage technology investments that post greater risk to investors. We therefore need a plan to attract medium-sized investments to help de-risk some of these critical technologies, for instance, the roll out of new biofuel innovations, smart grid technologies and water purifications technologies. But such funding is scarce, with much of the capital coming from larger infrastructure funds. I'm excited to engage with the cleantech ecosystem to explore how we can collectively shape policies that address these challenges and drive the growth of cleantech innovation in the UK.
