Are you unintentionally sidelining greatness in your team? 🤔 In the spirit of Black History Month, let's dive deep into the critical role leaders play in fostering true inclusion and rooting out those subtle acts of exclusion that can erode our workplace cultures. 🌱 Microaggressions might seem minor on the surface, but they add up, creating an environment that can stifle the potential and well-being of Black employees and other marginalized groups. As leaders, our responsibility goes beyond just recognizing these subtle slights; it's about actively challenging them and setting a standard for a truly inclusive workplace. It's about listening, learning, and leading by example. 🤝 This week, try to notice the nuances of your interactions. Are there moments where unintended bias might seep in? Addressing microaggressions starts with awareness. Then, take a step further by initiating open, empathetic dialogues that encourage understanding and growth. #blackhistorymonth2024 is a unique time. #dei is no longer a priority. (You could argue it never was.) So how are companies recognizing their Black employees and the accomplishments of the community as a whole? There are ways to 'do', yet still miss the mark. Target recently missed the mark with their #blackhistorymonth cards that misidentified notable Black leaders. (see the comments for more) ⭐Shoutout to @issatete for bringing this issue to light.⭐ This is the same Target with a robust diverse supplier program carrying The Honeypot, Tabitha Brown products, The Lip Bar, Black Girl Sunscreen, and more in their stores. So what can we learn from this? Supplier Diversity matters. And that's an actual role: Supplier Diversity Lead Supplier Diversity Specialist Supplier Diversity Coordinator Let's not just call out the problem. Procter & Gamble is investing in their Black employees wellbeing and their professional development. Is your organization? When you're new at a company, besides drinking from the firehose, many of us experience thoughts of self-doubt. Especially as a Black woman, new to the team, I've felt the pressure to ensure that my colleagues didn't think of me as a "diversity hire" who didn't deserve the position. I had the honor of sharing what I've learned along the way with the new Black team members at P&G, and I shared signed copies of my book, Black People Breathe. In my "Countering Imposter Syndrome" workshop which is part of the Black@Work program, we walked through ways to overcome feelings of self-doubt and show up as our best selves, confident, and ready to bring it! Walmart's Black & African American Resource Group (BAARG) hosted a Leadership Immersion on "Building a Path to Success" to conclude Black History Month. In essence, the key message I took away was to actively engage with challenges, remain dedicated, build supportive relationships, and use one's influence for positive change. Ultimately, it's about showing up and owning the journey to success. I took away so much that it was challenging for me to articulate everything, but I did my best to summarize what resonated with me. Thank you to all the speakers ! Dr. Kristen Guillory, Jennifer R. Jackson, Paul Lewellen, Rhonda Graham, Ciara Gary A., Cedric Clark Influence and Networking: Share insights with decision-makers and influential peers, being proactive in networking and influencing others. Active Engagement: Be actively involved in conversations and interactions, engaging with everyone instead of merely passing by. Work Ethic and Action: Emphasize the importance of hard work and taking action, as faith without works is ineffective. Persistence and Consistency: Highlight the significance of persistence, consistency, and dedication in pursuing goals. Focus on Priorities: Keep the main objectives at the forefront and avoid getting distracted by minor issues. Intellectual Engagement: Encourage active participation and engagement with intellectual pursuits and ideas. Supporting Others: Be supportive and show up for others in their endeavors. Using Influence Positively: Utilize your voice and power for good, making a positive impact in the community. Building Relationships: Cultivate strong and meaningful relationships, recognizing the importance of collaboration and teamwork. Collaborative Approach: Recognize the value of collaboration, understanding that going far often requires working together rather than alone. Celebrating Achievements: Take time to celebrate successes and milestones along the journey. Understanding the Target Audience: Recognize the target audience and define the problems they are facing. Problem Articulation: Clearly articulate the problems and their consequences. Problem-Solving Approach: Utilize problem-solving analytics and collaborate with intelligent individuals to address challenges in both business and technology. Characteristics Required for Success: Identify the essential traits and characteristics necessary for achieving success.  

Let's continue our search for values with RECOGNITION. Recognition frequently goes unnoticed, yet it plays an integral role in fostering a culture of appreciation in any organisation. It’s about seeing and highlighting the achievements of your team, no matter how small. But recognition isn't just about the workplace. It also applies to our relationships, friendships, and even our interactions with strangers. By acknowledging the efforts that people make, we instil a sense of worth and belonging. Imagine the boost in morale and motivation if we made a habit of recognising even the smallest victories. Start today. Look around you. Recognise, appreciate, and celebrate. Because everyone deserves to feel valued.

I'm excited to share another book recommendation with you: 'Leading Inclusion' by @Gena Cox. Gena, who participated in my 'How to Write a Must-Read' workshop, has put together this insightful guide. I really want to highlight the fantastic work of this Black author, especially as we celebrate Black History Month. So, 'Leading Inclusion' is a straightforward yet nuanced guide that helps leaders envision and integrate diversity and inclusion. It's all about making a real impact on the day-to-day experiences of marginalized employees. What sets it apart is that it challenges the usual approaches to DEI, encouraging leaders to adopt the mindset needed for bold action in this field. This book reframes inclusion not just as a moral obligation but as a crucial leadership competency. Drawing on research from conversations with scholars and the experiences of employees of color, the book offers a unique perspective on the traditional DEI framework. At its core is the 'Respect First' R.E.D.I. model, emphasizing the importance of Respect. It's an eye-opening read that challenges the norm and promotes a more effective and respectful approach to inclusion.
