Social Media at National Geographic

A big thank you to National Geographic for sponsoring today’s post 😂 — Half-joking, half-serious! (Thank you Tulani André) This past week, I had the incredible opportunity to attend Vidcon 2024 in Anaheim, California with our Youtube Manager Mira Dhakal. Attending this event was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. I had the privilege of attending various panels where industry experts, influencers, and brands discussed a wide range of topics, from social media platforms and algorithms to best practices - I learned a lot! And, Meeting influencers I grew up watching, as well as those I follow now, was an absolute blast. Here are my three main takeaways from this year's Vidcon: Fan vs. Follower - Instead of focusing on increasing your follower count, concentrate on building a strong community of fans who will always support you and your projects. Fans translate to sales and support across company initiatives, while followers do not. Artist vs. Professional - In social media, we often start as artists creating content we want to share. As we progress, we become professionals, shifting our focus to what our audience wants to see. Understanding and catering to their interests is key. Algorithm vs. Creator - Every platform has algorithms designed to enhance user experience and keep them coming back. These algorithms do not favor any specific creator or brand. Remember, good content is good content, and it will always find its audience. I’m excited to return to HQ and share all my learnings with my amazing team.
