Thank you so much to our co-organizer Mike Shoss for streaming this event! 150 people packed OneEleven last night, and the energy was electric. The panel was incredible, so many diverse perspectives from internal talent acquisition leaders, external recruiters, start-up advisors, and two recently hired PMs, we had all angles on the job hunt. I got so much out of the session, here are some of my key take-aways and your TLDR on how to approach your job hunt right now: 1) Be intentional - think about the type of company you want to work at, whether it be size, stage, domain, business model, and understand why you want that. 2) Personalization gives you an edge - blast applying and not caring about the opportunity is a waste of time. Use your intentionality to pick the jobs you really want, and then put the extra effort in to telling the org why you are interested and how you would make an impact on their bottom line. Our panelist Caitlin Chua cold applied to her current role and included a case analysis that framed her whole interview process. 3) Don't be afraid to be your authentic self - tell your employer about yourself, and show your personal interests. If that somehow deters them from hiring you, then it wasn't a fit for you in the first place. Remember rejection is protection. 4) Networking isn't a means to an end, it's the whole journey- Building connections in your community can absolute help you get a job, but you shouldn't do it only to get a job. Make networking a journey for yourself and aim to build meaningful connections. One of the early companies I worked for folded up, leaving me back at square one. What could I have done differently? As a high flyer, I had accumulated significant social capital until I took on the role. Upon starting at the company, I neglected my personal brand, and scaling back up became even tougher. I became overwhelmed by operational activities, losing sight of the strategies that initially propelled my success: continuous learning and strategic positioning. 🎯 Remember, do not abandon the practices that led to your opportunity once you attain it. I'd dare to say, prioritise building and investing in yourself more than your job. As the company expands, so should your personal growth, even more. While there are events beyond your control, your personal growth and development journey remain primarily in your hands. Being an outstanding Product Manager will make you more sought after, than being an ex-employee of <a specific company.> While being excellent on your job, keep learning, growing, and showing up. Throughout your career there are moments that grow and strengthen you as a professional and as a leader. One moment that comes to mind often for me came while working for one of the most ambitious, creative and innovative people I've ever met, Erika W., during our time together at #Uber. I shared that people outside of our team were clamoring to get involved in strategy and integrated campaign work that our team was leading. At the time - amidst rolling pre-IPO layoffs - I felt threatened and wanted to have a sense of ownership over the limited scope I was in control of. If you've ever been in a hyper growth tech startup, you may recognize that feeling as well. Her response echoes in my mind to this day - "𝑮𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕, 𝒍𝒆𝒕'𝒔 𝒑𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒎 𝒕𝒐 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌." In the years since, this response has strengthened my perspective in countless ways. The work that I've been fortunate to guide has only been meaningful because of the many voices that inform it and hands that touch it. If you're interested in supporting that work, making it better, making it bigger then you're someone I absolutely want to hear from and collaborate with. If you want to take over that work completely, then great, I'll pick up another ball and start running with that one instead. If I cannot find a way to plug you directly into a project, then I will find a way to inform you on what's happening with it and benefit from your perspective. The more mature of a leader I become, the more I recognize the impact of surrounding myself in early career with incredible people like Erika - who challenged my fears and redirected them into a more productive, collaborative place. In technology industry, there are two types of unique acquisitions: #Acquihire: This is a business strategy where the acquiring company typically integrates the acquired employees into its existing operations and may or may not continue the original business of the acquired company. For example, Meta acquired Downpour Interactive primarily to bring its talented team of developers and designers into Meta's Reality Labs division. #Strategicacquisition or #assetacquisition: This is the opposite of an acquihire, where the acquisition focuses primarily on obtaining a company's products, technology, intellectual property, or market share, rather than its employees. For instance, following the acquisition of Postmates by Uber, Uber integrated Postmates' technology into its own food delivery platform, Uber Eats, which included workforce restructuring and layoffs. 🌟 Reflecting on a Year of Growth and Resilience 🌟 One year ago, I found myself in a space of uncertainty as I, along with many talented individuals, was displaced from my role at Meta. The journey since then has been a rollercoaster of challenges, opportunities, and personal growth. Embracing Challenges as Opportunities: It's easy to feel disheartened when faced with unexpected changes. However, each challenge brought forth an opportunity to learn, adapt, and grow. Embrace the process; remember, setbacks are just setups for comebacks. 💪 Lessons Learned: Looking back, there are a few things I wish I knew at the beginning of this journey: 1. Control What You Can Control: The layoff wasn't your fault. Don't blame yourself for circumstances beyond your control. 🚀 2. Have Grace and Patience: If you hit roadblocks or aren't getting traction, step back and take a breath. It's not you; it's the market and industry. Be kind to yourself. 🌬️ 3. Recognize You Aren't Alone: We often talk about a work family while we're employed, but have you reached out to check on your people since you've been affected? Building a sense of community is crucial for mental health. 🤝 4. Ask for Help: Remember you aren't alone in this. Lean on your network, call your friends, family, or work family. Avoid isolation. I wish I had done this sooner. 🆘 5. Invest in Yourself: Just like during the pandemic, when we used our free time to develop new passions, use this time to educate yourself and build new skills. Don't be afraid to share your successes with others. 📚 6. Stay Consistent and Don't Give Up: Avoid burnout, protect your mental health, and remember, you aren't alone. Step back when needed, but most importantly, don't give up. 🛑 Gratitude for Support: In the midst of uncertainty, I've been fortunate to have an incredible support system. To my peers, colleagues, and friends who have checked in, offered advice, and provided emotional support – your kindness has made a world of difference. 🙏 Staying Hopeful for the Future: While the next opportunity hasn't presented itself just yet, I remain hopeful and optimistic about what lies ahead. Every closed door is a redirection towards a new and exciting path. 🌈 Grateful for the Journey: This journey has been a test of not only professional but also personal strength. Gratitude is the anchor that keeps me grounded amid the mental, emotional, and financial challenges. Remember, you are not alone in navigating these waters. ⚓ A Guiding Light for Others: For anyone going through a similar experience, I hope my journey serves as a guiding light. Anyone else heard the term - "a job for life"? I first heard it when I told people I'd been accepted onto an apprenticeship at BAE SYSTEMS - they would say "wow, well done, that's a job for life". In their eye's I had won the lottery - I was guaranteed a job for life. I was 18 years old and in their eyes my future looked like this... driving to the same place for 42 years, retiring at (hopefully) 60, having avoided any turbulence in my career. But the term really reflected the worry they had in their own lives, that they worried about being laid off. When I joined BAE SYSTEMS back in 1997 there was over 3,500 people at my site, within 3 years they laid off 1,000 and now there are around 700 people. When I joined Meta they peaked at 70,000+ employees later laying off over 21,000 people. As we went through the redundancies at Meta we was constantly reminded of the saying "focus on what you can control". In your career there are lots of things you can't control. But there at lots of things you can control too, like... - gaining as much experience at possible - learning new skills - creating side projects - even little thing like writing stuff on LinkedIn ^ these are the career survival skills. You see, there isn't a job for life. And thats OK. It's only a problem if you believe you have a job for life. I'll leave you with this... Last year the average number of people laid off in big tech was 21,882 people per month. So far in January 2024 there has been 24,584 layoffs.
