The year 2017, gave me a whole new perspective of what entrepreneurship is! “Entrepreneurship is not really about making money, money will come if it’s a solution addressing a pressing problem or a specific need” paraphrased from what I learnt for Steve Blank - who refined the Business Mode Canvas, creating a learning template for startup entrepreneurs. Going thru my photo files, saw these when I was fortunate to be a part of the 2nd Cohort of the Kumul Gamechanger program. It was an opportunity that I still value. Gratitude and Many Many Thanks to Kumul Foundation Inc and Anthony Smaré going out of their ways to create future entrepreneurs from a few. My pitch to qualify for a limited 20 space was: A Virtual/Online Shopping Mall - I know its coming and its coming soon. Learning experience from 14 days of value-adding game-changer experience that only the fortunate would have experienced at Silicon Valley (USA) or Stanford University was brought right here into Port Moresby. 14 days of intense night and day sessions covering essential components of the Business Model Canvas: 1. Customer Segments 2. Value Proposition 3. Channels 4. Customer Relationships 5. Revenue Stream 6. Key Resources 7. Key Activities 8. Key Partners If you are startup or seasoned entrepreneur, Business Model Canvas is the tool kit to take you to the next level. We had ideation sessions, sessions on value propositions, presentations of our Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) and final presentations to corporations who made time to listen to Papua New Guineans, who identified social and pressing issues and pitching solutions to address these problems. I continue to draw strenghts, inspiration and visions from that learning experience 7 years ago. I just hope, more of such will eventuate, or some of us taking the challenge to create more ecosystem and challenging more entreprenuers out of PNG. We can do it and we can create more solutions. What are the personality traits of a successful founder? Last week, Florian Huber, one of EWOR's co-founders and serial angel investor, spoke to ESMT Berlin students at their Sustainability Bootcamp, where they brainstormed new start-up ideas to combat climate change and pollution. Using the "Big 5 Model of Personality Traits" as a general framework, Florian linked the big five personality traits to entrepreneurial success and discussed what research deems the "perfect" personality mix for a founder: 1️⃣ Openness: high 2️⃣ Conscientiousness: high 3️⃣ Agreeableness: low 4️⃣ Neuroticism: low (i.e., high stress tolerance) 5️⃣ Extraversion: doesn’t matter as much While the Big Five Model gives us a decent starting point, it's not exactly flawless. It's a bit too basic, not representative enough, and can be easily manipulated when it comes to questionnaires. Beyond measurable data, it’s important to consider other characteristics and situational behaviour, which include: being quick on your feet, clever problem-solving, a bit of ruthlessness (within reason), the ability to attract talent, having a magnetic personality, being willing to go all-in, and prioritising the company over everything else. Very happy new year to all! 2023 was a tough year for some and an amazing year at the same time for others. To all my fellow VC friends, entrepreneurs, and innovation ecosystem, here are my top learnings from 2023: 1. Product market fit is easily taught in business school but highly elusive to find in reality for deeptech startups 2. Highest quality entrepreneurs are magnets in hiring the best people, they don’t need “search firms” to do all the work 3. The quality of a startup board is usually proportional to the quality of the company 4. One quick and dirty way (not recommended always) to review a data room for diligence is to focus on board minutes from past 3/4 quarters, this is where you understand what you think the company needs versus what the company thinks they need 5. You can count the number of people in venture who’ve returned a fund. All others are in the “thought leadership” business 6. I’m not well trained to look at growth-stage companies, this requires a very different skill set. Late-stage companies are riskier than early-stage companies for a whole new set of reasons and I now respect the analysts from Wall Street 7. Unbelievable that the next Ignite badge of future founders is already starting soon at the Ignite Accelerator by Aalto Entrepreneurship Society. I'm pumped to see what the new badge will bring on the stage at Ignite Demo Day 2024. I enjoy rewinding the pitching videos and following what my fellow entrepreneur peers are brewing. I mean it… we even brewed our very own founders fuel last year. Shout out to Owein Iveson. I also want to mention that I was very lucky to have had highly skilled directors at Ignite last year: Eelis Copeland and Rami Ruotsalainen. Big footsteps for the new directors to step in. But the biggest thanks goes to my co-founder Cheng Chen. We had a highly creative and intense learning time together. I learned a lot from her about circularity in urban food systems and procurement processes. I can only recommend to everyone to participate in accelerator programs. In my experience, you constantly wonder whether anything makes sense while you are in the program. But I promise that your learnings from the intense time will unfold in the time afterwards when you take on new challenges and projects in similar or different areas in life. The effects are sustainable and long-lasting.
