Covering crucial topics at AgriFutures evokeAG. 2024, the discourse centered around a pivotal issue: the urgent need for Australia’s agrifood producers to accelerate action on carbon reduction. In a landscape where carbon is the currency, the imperative to embrace low-carbon solutions has never been more apparent. As we approach the pivotal year of 2030, marked by ambitious decarbonization targets globally, the pressure mounts on the agrifood sector to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. "Of the world’s 100 largest economies, 69 are companies – not countries. The emissions targets of these companies, who appeal to shareholders and the future consumer, are actually what’s driving this," shares Professor Richard Eckard, Director of the University of Melbourne’s Primary Industries Climate Challenges Centre. "The most efficient farmers today have the lowest emissions intensity and would be at the head of the queue in meeting supply chain targets by 2030." Despite this urgency, adoption of low-carbon production methods in Australia remains slow to mandate. However, there's hope. Yesterday, we attended the European Dairy Association's Policy Conference, which brought together dairy industry experts from EU countries, regional and national government representatives, and other sectors that rely on Europe's dairy supply chains. When looking to the future and what the EU dairy farming sector could achieve by 2030, business leaders were conscious of the environment, recognising that only a sustainable and resilient sector can bring long term prosperity to farmers. To this end, the dairy sector reiterated the need for farmers to be viewed as part of the solution to achieving environmental sustainability, especially since we would rather our dairy products still be sourced from EU countries. More cross-societal collaboration is therefore necessary because farmers need to be aligned with the expectations of wider society but equally have access to the financial, technological, and policy resources capable of improving sustainability. #NextGenEUDairy #agriculture #dairy #publicaffairs #LykkeAdvice
