April 19, 2024: Tomorrow is National North Dakota Day! This day recognizes the 39th state to join the U.S. Some interesting facts about ‘The Peace Garden State’ include: · North Dakota may or may not have been the 39th state to have joined the union. Both North and South Dakota were admitted at the same time. President Benjamin Harrison asked then Secretary of State James Blaine, to shuffle up the paperwork to avoid anyone ever knowing the state that was signed first. Still, North Dakota is listed as the 39th state with South Dakota occupying the 40th spot. This is due to alphabetical order. · A few attempts were launched to drop “North” from the state’s name and go by the simpler “Dakota”. The first attempt was in 1947 and the second was in 1989. However, both were unsuccessful due to the pushback from the Legislative Assembly. · North Dakota is the leading producer of honey in the U.S., followed by South Dakota, California, Montana, and Florida. · Lake Sakakawea formed by Garrison Dam on the Missouri River is named after a Shoshone woman named Sacagawea. In 1805 – 1806, she worked as a guide and interpreter during the Lewis and Clark expedition. The lake was created in 1954. It is one of the largest artificial reservoirs in the United States. The Four Bears Bridge in New Town, North Dakota, was North Dakota’s first precast concrete segmental bridge. This bridge crosses the Missouri River, where the river is widened by Garrison Dam, creating Lake Sakakawea. The bridge features a variable depth superstructure that was built in balanced cantilever, minimizing the impact on the environment. FIGG designed this bridge for the North Dakota Department of Transportation Department of Transportation. This day recognizes the 30th state to join the U.S. Some interesting facts about ‘The Badger State’ include: · The state symbol, the badger, does not refer to the animal. Rather, it refers to the lead miners of the 1820s who travelled for work and even dug tunnels to find somewhere to sleep and stay warm—in the same way as a badger. · The largest woolly mammal to have ever been excavated was discovered in Kenosha. · Wisconsin is the #1 exporter of cranberries, sweet corn, and ginseng and the #1 producer of cheese in the U.S. · William Harley and the Davidson brothers (Walter and Arthur) built their first motorcycle in Milwaukee. · The first hydroelectric plant in the world was built at Fox River in Appleton in 1882. The Marquette Interchange is a major freeway interchange located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where I-94, I-794, and I-43 meet. These highways are the cornerstone of the southwestern Wisconsin freeway system and link about one-third of the state’s freeway traffic to the rest of the country. Originally built in the 1960s, the interchange underwent a total reconstruction between 2004 and 2008. The project involved 46 cranes and more than 4,000 workers in what was the largest construction project in state history at the time. FIGG Bridge Inspection, Inc. The US Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District just announced they are going to initiate high-volume discharges from Lake Okeechobee to both the east and west coasts this Saturday. They will be releasing 4,000 cfs west to the Caloosahatchee River, 1,800 cfs east to the St. Lucie River, and 500 cfs to Lake Worth Lagoon. This is really frustrating news, situations like these are why we founded #CaptainsForCleanWater in the first place—to put an end to damaging discharges that wreak havoc on our ecosystem, our communities, and our economy. The only way we'll be able to avoid dealing with situations like this year after year, is by building infrastructure and completing critical restoration projects that store, clean and send more beneficial water south to the Everglades instead of discharging massive amounts of dirty water to the coasts. And although we’ve seen a lot of progress in recent years, there’s still a lot of work left to do. In the meantime, the status quo and special interests perpetuate these situations, forcing every single stakeholder and ecosystem in South Florida’s waters to suffer, while one industry— #BigSugar —enjoys optimal conditions. #EvergladesRestoration is a HUGE undertaking—it's not an overnight fix. These projects will take years to complete, but with your help, we can continue prioritizing critical projects and get them across the finish line faster than ever before so that we can start seeing full-scale relief. So, stick with us and be a voice for our waters. The announcement this morning didn’t provide any timeline on the duration of releases, but we’ll be joining an Army Corps call later this afternoon where they’ll be discussing the specifics of the plan with the scientific community, and we’ll update you as we get more details. 7 Senators Ask U.S. Government to Use More #MassTimber. And this is just the start. Senators from Oregon (both), Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Vermont, New Hampshire & Maine sent a letter all about #masstimber to the Government Services Agency (GSA). They say #masstimber creates rural jobs, reduces wildfire, improves forest resiliency and reduces the carbon footprint of the federal government. And with 253 million square feet of federally funded construction - it matters. They asked: - What's being done in the budget to support mass timber? - How can federal agencies use more mass timber? - What challenges face #masstimber adoption? - And how is the GSA working with the Forest Service on this? The BLM will host five in-person public meetings in the spring of 2024. The Anchorage meeting will be on Monday, April 8th, at the Z. J. Loussac Library. The BLM needs to hear from you about whether you think Anchorage should be part of the Alaska Long Trail. BLM Alaska is evaluating the characteristics of the proposed Alaska Long Trail and recommending its eligibility as an addition to the National Trails System as a National Scenic Trail (NST). The purpose of the Alaska Long Trail NST feasibility study is to evaluate the feasibility, suitability, and desirability of designating the route as a NST. Results of the trail study will be shared with Congress, which has the sole authority to enact legislation to designate new NSTs. Following that, rights-of-way, authorizations, and easements must be secured for the entirety of the route. Only after completion of that process could construction begin on the project. This feasibility study does not authorize any activities. The preparation of the feasibility study meets the criteria set forth at 43 CFR 46.210(h) for a Departmental Categorical Exclusion. Today, Baltimore grapples with the aftermath of a tragic event: the Francis Scott Key Bridge collided with a ship, leaving devastation in its wake. Is it the worst design? My answer is NO. Designing a structure to withstand every possible force is an impossible task. You should design dolphins to redirect the ship from the piers. You must employ strategic foresight and innovative countermeasures. In this unfortunate incident, a vessel carrying 100,000 tons exerted immense pressure upon impact, surpassing 10 psi according to reports. The root cause, however, stems from the ship's power loss, leading to a desperate attempt at recovery that ended tragically. Although the pier couldn't withstand the overwhelming force, it highlights the need for resilient materials. By incorporating ductile, impact-resistant substances, we can fortify critical structures against unforeseen challenges. This calamity underscores the necessity for bridges spanning major shipping channels to be more robust and resilient.
