We know it is tough to hydrolyze #cellulose not that much due to bond strength but due to its intricate structure. Reactants, especially #enzymes, have a hard time penetrating the tight and strong network of hydrogen bonded units. Yet, cellulases are always able to make their way to break down this #biopolymer. Wouldn't it be cool to visualize how enzymes move on this polymer and process it? Learning such spatiotemporal dynamics could teach us a lot of lessons about the mechanisms of polymer degradation. Well, such visualization has been recently accomplished using #infrared #spectromicroscopy. #SCGSR awardee Jennifer Nill and Prof. Tina Jeoh from the University of California, Davis, along with Wujun Zhao, Sankar Narayanasamy, Liang Chen and Hoi-Ying Holman of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory just published this interesting work in #GreenChemistry.
