As Girls' Schools Association & Association of School and College Leaders celebrate their joint 150th anniversary, formed from a movement to provide education for girls, we look at what equality for women and girls looks like today. This anniversary marks an important milestone in girls’ education and a moment to acknowledge the vital historical, and future role, girls’ schools play in creating a fairer world for all. Join me at the ASCL conference on 8th March where I will take us on a journey through these 150 years, and present new research unpicking perceptions of equality for schoolgirls in areas such as business, politics, sport, and the home. Have we come far enough? How can educational leaders play a galvanising role in young women’s lives? How can schools act as a catalyst for positive societal change through empowering every young woman?

To get better, more equitable outcomes for youth and families, we have to give youth decision making power. To do so, Cradle to Career Fresno County supported a youth-led impact assessment aimed at understanding and addressing the lack of STEM diversity at a local high school. This new case study, published in partnership with Fresno C2C and Kids Impact Initiative, shares insights from the process: https://hubs.li/Q02l6jD60

🌟 Exciting News from the National Association for Gifted Children Conference! 🌟 Carol A. Carman, Robert A. Bartsch, and Christine A. P. Waltherhad the privilege of presenting their research paper, "Equality vs. Equity in Multiple Measures: Identification Matrix Functioning with Diversity," at the prestigious NAGC annual conference in Orlando, FL, on November 10, 2023. Our research delves into the complexities of identifying gifted students, particularly focusing on the use of identification matrices and their impact on diverse student populations. We explored how different measures, when combined, can either promote or hinder equity in the educational landscape. This presentation is a must-see for educators, administrators, and policymakers who are dedicated to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment in gifted education. We discussed the challenges and opportunities in creating identification systems that are both fair and effective, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to be recognized for their unique talents and abilities. Join us in this important conversation and help us shape a more equitable future in education. Let's work together to ensure that our identification practices in gifted education are as diverse and dynamic as the students we aim to serve. #NAGC23 #GiftedEducation #EducationalEquity #DiversityInEducation #InclusiveEducation #EducationPolicy #AcademicResearch

Today's Chrysalis After-School Facilitator highlight is Michele Larche. This is Michele's first year as a Facilitator. Here is a brief Q&A with Michele highlighting her experience. What is your favorite topic to cover in your Chrysalis After-School group? "Being true to yourself. (not allowing other influences to change who you are)" What do you wish people knew about the girls you work with? "Under the squealing and frenetic behaviors lives a thoughtful human being." What is your Chrysalis After-School Facilitator superpower? "Finding ways to turn lessons into actual experiences" What is the most important thing for girls to have when they leave Chrysalis after school? "They need the self-confidence to continue life with a sense of who they are and how they fit in this world. The first rule on our circle guidelines was: BE KIND" Thank you, Michele, for your time and commitment to empowering young women within central Iowa.

As we approach the end of 2023, I am reflecting on the work that motivates me as an educator and identifying what intentions I want to set in another calendar year. With Civics Days happening in Oklahoma, New York and California, I couldn't be more inspired by the change our young people are working to lead in these communities. We offer Generation Citizen #educators ongoing support so students can receive an action civics education. GC educated over 30,000 students and trained over 450 teachers who collectively led over 1200 #ActionCivics projects throughout the school year. And 88% of teachers reported that participating in GC positively impacted their belief that there’s value in sharing power with students. During this #seasonofgiving, we encourage your continued support as we kick off our end-of-year campaign, #Democracy’s Rising Generation. Young people have the most important role in our democracy: carrying it forward. Support us in equipping them to do so.
