For those who may not be aware, in addition to my role as Commercial Director at PLAYE, I also serve as the P&C President at Forest Lodge Public School (FLPS). Over the past few months, our P&C and school community have embarked on a journey in response to the Voice to Parliament initiative, which you can learn more about by visiting the FLPS P&C website. In summary, the FLPS community's journey began with the P&C executive's suggestion to publicly endorse a 'yes' vote. However, we quickly received feedback indicating that this stance did not reflect the views of our entire school community. In response, we pivoted towards listening and finding common ground. This led to our school community agreeing on actions that prioritize education, reconciliation, and closing the gap: - Our P&C will host a non-partisan information session on The Voice to Parliament, the history of Aboriginal affairs, the Uluru statement, and reconciliation in education. - We made a commitment that all funds raised at our democracy BBQ on referendum day would support activities within our school community to further reconciliation and close the gap. I'm sharing this because the lessons learned from this process are applicable not only to the business world but also to negotiations and partnerships. When we react hastily with anger, we hinder our ability to understand. However, in the face of disagreement, if we take the time to understand, listen, and seek common ground, we increase the likelihood of a positive outcome, even if it differs from what either party initially anticipated.
