🌳 We are now joining other partners in a new project to research and promote sustainable forest management and conservation of European forests. 🔍 The project ‘Sustainable management models and value chains for small forests’ (SMURF) focuses on developing tailored solutions for small forest properties. Officially kicked off earlier this month, the project aims to create new organisational and business models based on closer-to-nature forestry practices. 🎯 These models will prioritise the valorisation of forest products, provide essential resources such as training programmes, digital tools and empower forest owners and stakeholders. 📜 Additionally, the project, aligned with the European Forestry Strategy, seeks to contribute to the establishment of standardised policies and payment systems at regional, national and European levels. Forest ➡️ Bog You may have heard the term 'Forest to Bog Restoration' as it becomes increasingly commonplace in environmental circles. Typically speaking, this refers to the removal of plantation forestry from areas that were planted on deep peatlands and the subsequent restoration of the habitat to rebuild the ecosystem services a healthy bog provides. It is important to note that it does NOT include native, naturally wooded peatland habitats - some of these can be rather special! With approximately 18% of the UK's peatland currently under forestry, forest to bog restoration poses a significant opportunity for carbon emission reductions and improvements to biodiversity. Earlier this year, two members of our team took part in a Forest to Bog Management training course led by Peatland ACTION and Forestry and Land Scotland. The two-day course focused on best practice and operational site planning, including risk assessment and emergency procedures when developing forest to bog sites. Annually, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change, in collaboration with the Department of Forestry (DoF), organizes tree planting and management events from December 15th to April 15th of the subsequent year. These activities aim to increase understanding of the significance of trees and forests while encouraging a tradition of tree planting and maintenance in Malawi. The theme for the 2023/2024 National Forestry Season, "Forest Innovation in Action: Reforestation for a Sustainable Tomorrow," reflects the proactive approach towards addressing environmental challenges. It is crucial to encourage community participation and engagement to ensure the success of these initiatives. Our involvement as citizens in tree planting and management activities is critical in promoting a culture of environmental stewardship and sustainability, leading to a greener and healthier environment for current and future generations.
