It is estimated that 10% of pregnant women in #SouthAfrica have Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM), yet many go undiagnosed. More widely available GDM testing is urgently needed and point-of-care (POC) glucose tests could be a solution to bring testing closer to women. Lungile Khambule, University of the Witwatersrand & National Health Laboratory Service presented a study at the Society for Endocrinology Metabolism and Diabetes of South Africa (#SEMSDA) conference assessing performance of several POC glucose devices in the diagnosis of GDM. While more rapid in result turnaround, POC devices did not reach acceptable levels of sensitivity and specificity to diagnose GDM, compared to lab testing. More data is needed to determine the optimal balance between lower diagnostic accuracy and better reach of women for GDM screening. This research was funded by FIND through a grant from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. Cathy HALDANE, Dr. Lorrein Muhwava-Mbabala, MPH PhD
