Know your audience. As part of being a HSE professional you find yourself engaging with a wide variety of stakeholders, not all of which will resonate with the same delivery style. For example, the daily briefing I gave today to approximately 75 front line workers & supervisors involved some light hearted jokes and some colourful language however, the severity of the message remained the same as the well worded document I was referring to. This delivery method would likely not be received so well in a room full of senior managers. Know your audience, and when engaging front line workers don't bore them by reading out jargon-filled 'safety lingo' in a monotonous manner 5 minutes after they've arrived into work on a Saturday morning. - Explain the reasons behind the topic and its relevance to their work. - Connect the topic to real-life situations and examples. - Urge the teams to participate and show your engagement by responding, seeking answers, escalating, and taking necessary actions. -Let them know you do, personally give a s**t about their health, safety and wellbeing. #engagement #hop #healthandsafety #safetybriefing #frontlineworkers #toolboxtalks #tbt #tar #audience #oilandgas

If you see something, say something. Do something. These phrases are not just essential safety concerns in the workplace, environment, and community, but also in our day-to-day activities. I remember when I was a Site Lead and my HSE Manager Joseph Egbekun (TechIOSH, ANiSafetyE) now my line Manager would visit the site. If he observed things and if there was an issue, I would try to explain. But he always reminded me, "It has to be reported the way it happened." This is what safety really is - no sugarcoating, no bending of rules, and no excuses. To promote safety, we need to follow these two phrases: If you see something, say something. Report hazards, incidents, or near-misses in our workplace to your supervisor or HSE champion. Speak up if you witness unsafe behavior or practices. Share your safety concerns or suggestions with your team or management. Do something. Take action to prevent accidents or harm by addressing reported hazards or concerns. Implement safety measures or procedures to mitigate risks. Participate in safety training and drills to prepare for emergencies. Get involved in workplace safety committees or initiatives to promote a safety culture. We need to foster a culture of accountability and responsibility. Encourage reporting safety issues without fear of retaliation. Empower individuals to take ownership of safety. Promote proactive measures to prevent accidents and harmful. Let's create a safer workplace, environment, and community for everyone. Remember, safety is everyone's responsibility! If you see something, say something, and do something to make a positive impact! #safety #seesomething #saysomething

One of the things that has stuck with me from my HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) career is the ability to not only handle unsafe acts and unsafe conditions but also to effectively de-escalate workplace interpersonal issues. Having managed large workplaces with a workforce ranging from 50 to 100 persons per day, it was always important to ensure that I remained on top of any situation by ensuring that each person was given proper induction to promptly acquaint them with the basic life-saving rules and procedures. When people bring problems to you, often they will expect that you react in their favour as quickly as possible. This is always expected. However, it is crucial to understand that taking only one side could result in anarchy. No one wants anarchy. This is definitely why you were hired in the first place. Closing out safety-related issues remains an instantaneous action that is best done on the spot as effectively as possible with minimal delay. De-escalation was a tool I actively used to ensure that all interpersonal and safety-related issues were promptly resolved through avenues such as purposeful actions, verbal communication, and body language. It also entails asking the right questions and getting to understand the what, the why, the when, and the who. I find this tool very useful in my everyday life—managing projects and stakeholders, or simply attending to problems in the home or other social gatherings. #energyengineering #hse #salesengagement #directionaldrilling Youth Sustainability Corner

#MeetTheTeam 🔸What is your Name❔ Callum Sissons MIIRSM TechIOSH MIFSM 🔸What’s your role in the committee❔ Communications Coordinator 🔸What’s your job title❔ Health & Safety Advisor 🔸What industry do you work in❔ Manufacturing/Construction/Consultancy 🔸Are you local❔ Winterton - North East Lincolnshire. 🔸How did you get into health and safety❔ My journey into health and safety started in my first role, where I was voted in as the health and safety representative. Since then, I've immersed myself in all things safety across diverse workplaces, gaining a deep understanding and passion for the profession. Investing in my professional development, I self-funded my IOSH Working Safely and my NEBOSH General certification. Through a combination of fortunate opportunities and unwavering determination, I've found my calling in this profession. Moving forward, I'm committed to continuously improving safety standards and building a culture where we can all learn from each other. 🔸Tell me a little about yourself❔ I am a passionate and dedicated safety professional. I have recently completed and passed my NEBOSH Diploma and proud member of the Institute of Fire Safety Managers. There’s always something to learn in this profession. My self-driven nature and curiosity keeps me constantly motivated to develop further. Outside of work, I absolutely love been in the Lake District with my wife, little boy and dog - it’s probably my favourite place in the world. If I’m not hiking in the lakes you’ll catch me at a music festival/gig. And when it comes to football I’m a big Manchester United fan. 🔸Why have you joined the committee❔ Initially, my motivation for joining the committee was fueled by a desire to learn and grow as a health and safety professional. It presented an invaluable opportunity to connect and network with the experts in our region. However, the unforeseen challenges of the pandemic hindered the face-to-face interactions I had hoped for to further my development. Since then, my focus has evolved slightly. While I remain committed to providing real value to our members, my attention is now directed towards supporting individuals in a similar position to where I once found myself—those just starting out or contemplating a career in this remarkable profession. I'm always open for discussions about my journey and how you can navigate your own path to finding your dream job in the world's greatest profession. If you're in search of guidance, here are two immediate tips: Connect or follow these guys; Andrew Protheroe MSc MSc FIoL FIIRSM CMIOSH CQP MCQI Carly Hughes CMIOSH Alanah Campbell Jimmy Quinn Stuart Hughes David Cant James Pomeroy Harold Floyd James MacPherson Karen J. Safety Talk (also known as Safety Morning Talk or Toolbox Meeting) is a structured, regular meeting that is held at the start of each workday or shift. Keep it short and simple, safety talk lasts approximately 10-15 minutes so it does not disrupt production activities. Safety Talk that held regularly between supervisors and workers or employees to discuss matters regarding HSE (Health, Safety and Environment), whether about the latest issues, regulations, work procedures, personal protective equipment, also potential dangers. Along with improving safety at work, safety talks keep team members alert to possible hazards, improve team communication, and show that the company values employees safety and wellbeing. #safetyfirst #healthsafetyenvironment
