If a restaurant owner hired me to be their Process Consultant, here’s what I would do.. Restaurants tend to have a high failure rate for many reasons, but the top I hear is 😞 Low Retention/High turnover with staff 😞 Pricing to stay with the market 😞 Gaining new customers/ keeping consistent ones Even though I’m not in this field, as you can see, a lot of these points tend to be the same among the different industries. You just have to be aware of what to look for because although the different industries may have similar points, the reasoning may be different. First, it’s time to pick up part why they are having these issues. - Customer service as a whole is a tough industry because you deal with the best and worst sides of people. The worst is enough to get people to quit.. hence the low retention rates amongst staff - Pricing is always an issue because you want to make sure you are charging to make a profit but not also scaring away your customer base. Being “high ticket” is not a “solve all” solution for this industry. - once you announce you are open, people are excited to go to the new restaurant. After a few months, reality set in. What are you doing to keep these people coming back? Now, it’s time for a some solutions. This will not always work for every business, so keep the following with a grain of salt. 😍 You know your staff is going to deal with some hard to please people and that can affect their mental wellness. Some thing you can do is offer a wellness inspired benefit (free massage, spa day, therapy session, etc) every month. 😍 you are always working on staying even. Instead of throwing away food, utilize apps, such as “too good to go” to bundle up things you were going to toss and sell at a discounted rate. 😍 like every business, you need to have a signature drink, meal, etc, to keep people coming. Look back to see what things were popular when you opened/monthly. You can create a brand new dish inspired from the popular dish or highlight this in your marketing. There are so many moving pieces, but there is always a solution to common problems, no matter the industry.
