“Currently TMX shipping accounts for only 6% of the total marine traffic in the Salish Sea. We are concerned with 100% of the marine traffic and its associated impacts to our livelihoods as Indigenous people. “To address the risks and impacts of marine traffic, the IAMC must move from A [Advisory] to O [Oversight], and this requires cooperation and participation of all parties. The IAMC Marine Shipping Subcommittee is already doing the things that some of the federally led initiatives are aspiring to do. We are Indigenous led and it’s taken us a significant effort and many years to get to where we are today, to work in cooperation with the impacted communities on the south coast of Vancouver Island. “Having an Indigenous led group like ours allows for less bureaucracy in order to move our work in ocean protection, safety, and monitoring forward. The Maritime Logistics and Shipping sector has a huge impact on Washington, thanks to the leadership of The Northwest Seaport Alliance, which is the 4th largest container gateway in North America, and other important ports in our state. Today, more than 23,500 jobs at 980 businesses are in this sector that help move 16 billion tons of containerized cargo annually. Those are just some of the important findings of the Washington Maritime Federation’s new “The Economic Impacts of Washington’s Maritime Industry” study, which was conducted by the McKinley Research Group in association with High Peak Strategy. Tomorrow, Thursday 25th April 2024, marks 65 years since the St. Lawrence Seaway opened to deep sea ocean vessels, opening up the Great Lakes of North America to ocean vessels travelling from the Atlantic Ocean as far inland as Duluth, Minnesota! 📍🚢⚓🌐 A system of locks, canals and channels stretching 3,700km inland, St. Lawrence Seaway is considered to be one of the great engineering marvels from the 20th century.   For container shipping, which was just in its infancy in the 1960s, the opening of the causeway provided a cost effective, safe, reliable, and environmentally smart means of moving raw materials, agricultural commodities, and manufactured products to and from domestic and global markets. 🚢💧🌎   Today, the successful operation of St. Lawrence Seaway is a major driver of the Northern American economy, accounting for 30% of combined Canadian and US economic activity and employment.
