As you probably remember, the team were rowing in pairs, doing 2 hour shifts, 24 hours per day. ⌚ • This meant that when they finished their shift they would need to clamber into the cabin, get their wet weather gear off, cook, eat, do any navigation work, send any imagery back for social media, perhaps convert some sea water into drinking water, perhaps fix anything that needed fixing, and THEN get some sleep. 😴 • This meant that under their normal shift pattern, they never got more than 90 minutes sleep at a time. 🤯 • But, did you know, that when the going got tough, they needed to row three up? 🚣♂️🚣♂️🚣♀️ • In this image the crew were rowing against a strong current. The ocean looks relatively calm but the water was being pushed in the opposite direction to Antigua. This meant three of the team had to row at the same time, and that meant that they got even LESS sleep! 🥴 • It's absolutely wild that they were able to continue in this manner at all, but doing it with a grin on their faces makes it all the more amazing! 😁 • One of the reasons for sharing some of these insights is to remind everyone that the team are still raising money for Get A-Head Charitable Trust and Meningitis Now - if you enjoyed following the team and didn't have a chance to donate - now is the time! Aboard their rowing boat the team had millions of calories worth of specially formulated dehydrated meals that would give them maximum calories. But for Rod, it was a simple pack of Tesco noodles that did it for him. 🍜 • A meal he referred to as 'pure heaven'. 😇 • And whilst we now need to go and recalibrate what heaven looks like - it does highlight an important point; food aboard the boat is really important from an energy perspective - but it's also really important from a psychological perspective. 🧠 • Sure, Tesco noodles are not as calorie dense as the other meals aboard - but it was a little bowl of happiness for Rod, and as he sat there, with his heavenly meal, watching the sun go down, with this three friends...that boat was a very happy place to be in deed. ☺️ • One of the reasons for sharing some of these insights is to remind everyone that the team are still raising money for Get A-Head Charitable Trust and Meningitis Now - if you enjoyed following the team and didn't have a chance to donate - now is the time! Yesterday we had a Board of Trustees meeting for Tigers4Ever, reviewing the financial year 2023/24 and looking forward to 24/25’s fundraising targets and priority projects. The intention of this post is to shine a light on young female athletes (like Lili in the video below) striving to play professional sport; but first, some context. I’m blessed with 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls, all of whom have played sport, 3 at youth representative level (football, futsal, cricket), and one who played semi professionally in NZ’s top ⚽️ tier. I’ve coached girls and mixed teams, including a female U15 team to New Zealand Football's national futsal title. I’ve played competitive junior, youth and senior football, plus cricket, tennis, rugby, and Aussie Rules. I’m a fan of the Wellington Phoenix Football Club, Carlton Football Club, Warringah Rugby Club and along with all of that, I’ve been a lifelong fan of the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles. It’s heartwarming to see some of the players I’ve coached now playing for their National team and in professional ⚽️ environments. I’d like to think somewhere along the way I had a positive influence. So, as a father of 2 daughters, a coach of female players, and as a fan of all sports, how good is it to see young Lili in the video? Lili is a northern beaches local, a fan of Manly Warringah Sea Eagles - and now a representative rugby league 🏉 player, chasing her field of dreams with the club she has supported all her life. I understand the sacrifices young athletes like Lili and their families make to chase a dream. It takes time, money, love, and the expertise of good coaches to provide holistic support around young athletes - to grow them to be good people. Only a small percentage will play professionally, but with the right mindset, the young person will have grown through the experience, whatever their eventual career.
