This unique series unfolds as a geopolitical satire, revealing the rumination of a captured American diplomat awaiting his execution in an unnamed Middle Eastern nation. From his prison room, he undertakes the dismantling of the American empire. I first saw Prof Vannini's video ethnographies years ago. He has done a great job in popularising video methods in the mobility paradigm and is quite successful in getting funding for interesting individual projects. He does it with a lot of passion and creativity, it is very visible even in a short video. In this inspiring introduction he talks about the gifted knowledge that he wants to "gift forward". 2023 marks 50 years since the release of O Lucky Man! (1973), Lindsay Anderson’s epic Brechtian satire co-written by David Sherwin and starring Malcolm McDowell. Although it contains some highly problematic elements (e.g., Arthur Lowe in blackface), the film’s critical message is more relevant than ever before. Surreal and dreamlike, O Lucky Man! can be interpreted as a fable about the unpredictable, high-stakes, high-pressure world of labour we associate with neoliberal capitalism. By exploring the desires and anxieties of work, wealth, poverty, success and failure, it bears comparison to more modern films such as Sorry to Bother You (2018).
