NI Tax Professionals 📢 Over the last couple of years I've seen an increase in people seeking a move away from Tax. Here's my advice... Don't! Well, it is of course your decision, but here's a few things to consider first; 👉 There are over 4000 Chartered Accountants in NI. CTA membership is currently less than 10% of this. You are in high demand! 👉 Common misconception - You don't have to be CTA qualified to build a career in Tax. Not straight away anyway. Just finished your ACA exams? Take a year...take two! 👉 Not a huge fan of Compliance? No problem, there are a wide range of options and specialisms to choose from that offer value-adding Advisory work in CT, PCT, Employment Tax, R&D, VAT and more 👉 Many roles offer exposure to a variety of these specialisms 👉 Considering Industry? Over the last few years NI Tax opportunities in Industry have more than doubled and this trend will continue. These are typically senior positions. 'Global Tax Manager' and 'Head of Tax' are recent roles I've worked on. Both required applicants with experience up to (at least) Manager level. Solidify your experience before making this step. With the private sector becoming a more sought-after area in tax work, how does it differ from applying for roles in the public space? To start with, your competition will be greater than in the talent-scarce sector of public accounting, so make sure you are not only bringing your A-game but also know exactly what the company is looking for. Most corporations within the U.S. international tax space seek individuals who have experience working with large multinational corporations and who possess a strong background in compliance, tax provision, and planning. You’ll be in charge of providing support for the preparation of Forms 5471, 5472, 8858, 8865, and 1118. You’ll also be responsible for assisting in annual and quarterly international tax provision calculations under ASC 740 reporting. You will need to have a strong understanding of tax reporting and projections for GILTI, BEAT, FDII, and Subpart F. Alongside this, having a good grasp of transfer pricing will also go a long way. If you have a niche in which you specialize, perhaps in the manufacturing space or in financial services, definitely lean on that experience and focus on applying to companies in those sectors. As always, when discussing applying for positions, use as many metrics as you can and show how you have solved clients' problems and applied your skillset to the best of your ability. Prospective employers will be able to paint a mental picture of how you will do that for them. Then, just sit back and watch the offers start pouring in, waving goodbye to chaotic busy seasons chasing clients for all their information, and say hello to wonderful bonus payments and plentiful stock options.
