Count me among the students Judy Brown helped during her 43 years at Watkinson School . As a new educator, here are some #wordsofwisdom I gleaned from Judy's career: 🥉 Keep your humanity front and center. Often, this advice is applied in the context of interacting with students (e.g: see students as human), but I think that it is easier to be human as a student—especially if you happen to be a student with one or more marginalized identity—if the people in power who you interface with (that means educators in all roles) first own their own fallibility—and lives outside of work! An easy way to set these kind of humanity-affirming (and thus healthy) expectations: Explicitly say when you check your emails/other work communications in your email signature, syllabus, or any other student-facing information page. If you, for example, work from 9 to 5 on Mondays through Fridays then, this way, a student who sends an email at 6 PM at Friday KNOWS that you are not blowing them off if you respond at 9 AM on Monday. Another (more fun) way to display your humanity is to have mementos in your office or virtual space, inviting conversation about hobbies and other non-work dimensions of life. (No person is one-dimensional!) 📧 🍋 🥈 Don't forget about SMART goals. At least for me, this is something I tend to slip with as the school year / semester goes on, but they're called SMART goals for a reason! And they're smart for students and educators alike! Start a meeting with discussion of goals named (and preferably written or in some other way made "tangible") last time. End a meeting with articulation of new goals and/or refinement of previously-articulated goals. Ambition is important, but ambition without direction is a recipe for burnout. And victories of any size are revitalizing—and call for celebration! 📋 🔥 In case you need a reminder of what SMART goals are: Specific Measurable Achievable Relevant Time-Based 🥇 Always maintain a curiosity stance. Enter as a co-investigator, not the judge. Combine your expertise (e.g: of a program's GPA requirements, of your class' rules around late work, etc.) with the expertise of the student (e.g: career goals, circumstances that led to work not being completed on-time, etc.). You are on the same team! And even if you do not get the result that you want, there is always a learning experience to be gleaned. 🔎 🧠 What lessons have you learned from retiring educators who touched your life? Please share in this space! 💭 #grateful #reflection #educator
Hagan Brown and I are so proud of our Mom, Judy Brown, who was honored today at Watkinson School, where she has taught and worked one on one with students for 43 years. Mom’s commitment to collaboration with her colleagues, tireless time spent with hundreds of students over the decades, and unwavering passion for academic excellence balanced with a care and compassion for all learning styles makes her one of the great educators of her time! Mom, we are so proud of the mark you have left on so many- including us! Today we toast you and all that you continue to do. Here is to a retirement well deserved and filled with new adventures, exploration and continued service to others. We love you!

Head of Early Years | Senior Leadership Team | Early Years advocate, speaker & writer | Parenting Coach |
“What was the best bit about today?” In life, there will always be hardships. Rather than shielding children from these hardships, we want to ensure that we, as a school, have educated children with strategies so that they feel stronger when they inevitably have to face them. Focusing on gratitude can help build resilience. For adults, keeping a gratitude diary has gained a lot of good press in recent years in supporting us through hardships. For Nursery children, we achieve the same aims by phrasing questions that focus on finding the positives in a day such as, “what was the best bit of today?” For the full article included in the March edition of the Early Years Educator, please see the link below. https://lnkd.in/e4xg2GGq

🚫 No July Learning Call due to the long weekend🚫…. but let's maintain our momentum, building on last month's learning on the power of consistency… Inspired by the T20 Cricket World Cup Final, where I couldn’t help but focus on the learnings, here are my top 10 lessons on self-leadership, teamwork, perseverance, humility, resilience, respect, strategy & planning, as gleaned from the game and post-match insights over the weekend! 1. Preparation Pays Off: The winning captain's emphasis on years of preparation and hard work rings true in life—consistency is key to achieving dreams. 🏋️♂️ 2. Never Give Up: Team India's resilience defending 30 in 30 showcases the power of perseverance—it's never over until it's over! 🏆 3. Belief in Team: Public support from the captain and coach for Kohli (who was going through a rough patch!) before the big event—inspiring your team can boost morale and performance! 🌈 4. Credit to Team: The captain crediting his team after victory—a hallmark of successful leadership. 🤝 5. Grit, Excellence, and Humility: Kohli's performance under pressure on a Big Day and his humble demeanor in the interview – must have traits for high achievers 🙏 6. Overcoming Challenges: Hardik Pandya’s performance after facing brutal criticism and personal challenges shows the power of determination 💪 7. Presence of Mind: Surya's crucial catch underscores the importance of readiness and focus in critical moments. 🧠 8. Respect Team Decisions: Bench players celebrating passionately show respect for team unity and management decisions—team goals prevail! 👏 9. Show Emotions: Athletes' tears remind us of the power in displaying emotion—it's OK to be human and authentic. 😢 10. Family Matters: Kohli's post-victory video call with family in the ground and Rohit's family celebration reflect balancing personal and professional life. ❤️ As someone who was born & raised in India (where cricket is more like a religion!) and has grown personally and professionally in the USA (and still growing!), witnessing India win the title and the USA advance to the Super 8 was incredibly rewarding. It was a true testament to the power of hard work and dedication! Let’s apply these lessons to our journey, be it personal, professional or leadership growth!! 🏃♂️🚀 Wishing you all a Happy 4th in advance!
🎉 Happy 4th of July to Our Community of Learners!🎉 Wishing you all a wonderful Independence Day filled with freedom, joy, and celebration! To ensure you enjoy an uninterrupted long weekend, we’re canceling the call for July. Mark your calendars for our next monthly call on August 2nd!! 🌞 Have an amazing summer 🌞
