Always a tricky subject, do you know if you are engaged with your residents? A big subject area that needs to see improvement across the sector and is rightly the focus of the regulator but just how the sector copes remains to be seen. At WCH we put tenants at the heart of our decision making and we are making strides where we can to develop our approach and dynamically evolve our strategy.

The latest edition of CIH Unlocked has landed 🛬 💥Some great snapshots from the TAI 2024 Conference in Wales to digest, with professionalism in housing being a major feature. 💥Also a look at why housing associations are ditching the X platform, and whether you should too. 💥And my latest piece explores why having tenants on boards is reshaping engagement across the new housing landscape. I spoke to Christopher Cheshire FCIOB MAPM, non-executive director at Newlon Housing Trust and chair at Watford Community Housing about why having tenants on boards has been so important to the success, and direction, of their organisation. I also spoke to Gavin Wallen, resident board member at Phoenix Community Housing based in South London, who explained why their model, which is one of the UK’s only resident-led housing associations, is so beneficial to the organisation and community they serve. I had a very good conversation with #PRS media celebrity 😉 Ben Beadle, CEO of the National Residential Landlords Association - NRLA. Sometimes, the #BTR sector likes to think itself apart from the #PRS, piggy-backing on a distinctly unhelpful and negative narrative around private landlords. Ben's work at the #NRLA has been transformative and it's clear that he is every bit as focussed on creating a better #PRS as the #BTR sector is. 'Alignment' and 'collaboration' are easy and convenient throwaways when it comes to positioning a business or proposition. Collaboration is a principle tenet of the UK Single-Family Association and we have been engaging with a wide range of stakeholders in the housing delivery & rental business. We are aligned with many of the principals of the #NRLA. There should be no 'Ivory Towers' in the #PRS. No smugness or superiority. No exclusivity. . No sneering. We are all #Allies The UK Single-Family Association is hugely supportive of Ben and the #NRLA in their endeavours and the work they have been doing with the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities and we will do everything we can to amplify the positivity Ben has for the #PRS. After all, it's in all our interests and those of renters, that the #PRS works for everyone. #Residentialinvestment #Homes #Housingcrisis #affordabilitycrisis #Houses #Institutionalinvestment

Impact in Focus: In honor of CPC’s 50th year, and in celebration of completing renovations to 16 Manhattan NYCHA developments, we’re shining the spotlight on the PACT Renaissance Collaborative. In 2019, New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), the nation's largest housing authority, chose the PACT Renaissance Collaborative (PRC) to renovate and revitalize 1,700 apartments across 16 Manhattan developments that are home to nearly 3,000 residents. PRC is comprised of CPC, Monadnock Development, The Community Development Trust, Community League of the Heights (CLOTH), Kalel Companies, and Lemor Development Group. Our participation in NYCHA’s innovative PACT-RAD program further cemented CPC as a trusted organization committed to enhancing the living conditions of NYC residents. We’re delighted to have successfully transformed these buildings into the #affordable, #safe, and #equitable homes their tenants deserve. This work has a meaningful effect on the lives of New Yorkers, and we can’t wait to see how much more impact we can make in the next 50 years. Please follow along all year long as we celebrate our 50th anniversary by highlighting the projects, people, and communities that have made CPC what it is today. #CPC50th #50YearsofImpact #50YearsofInnovation

That there are STILL a PLETHORA of buildings, offices and HOMES sitting empty due to over-extension of foreign investment and irresponsible debt-loans by our national banks SITTING EMPTY while people are sleeping outside in tents should concern EVERY CANADIAN. Alas, the issues go on. PUBLIC ACCESS TO SOCIAL SERVICES AND FOOD AND SHELTER IS A BASIC HUMAN RIGHT. There is MORE THAN ENOUGH to share. And those who are taking too much are committing crimes against humanity by depriving so many in this city BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS. That there are an infinite number of white men being paid sunshine list salaries and that these social services are not only inaccessible but public health itself has been PURPOSEFULLY neglected to make room for PRIVATISED care is INEXCUSABLE. Skirting the HUMAN RIGHTS of ALL is NOT how CANADA WORKS. I would tag the Government of Ontario in this post but they are not able to be tagged (nor is our Premiere) via LinkedIn ROOFS OVER HEADS and SAFE SHELTER FOR ALL IN NEED. TD RBC CIBC Rogers Communications Bell JUST THESE COMPANIES ALONE HAVE AN INFINITE AMOUNT OF PROPERTY - glamorously and regularly renovated, like so many of the mansion homeowners in The City of Toronto who own multiple properties and vacation homes and the business owners paying employees less than a living wage while acquiring more property like it's a MONOPOLY game, has demonstrated #SYSTEMIC caste abuse within this province also. That our grocery giants and media giants are bragging about their enormous bonuses being extended to those who already have SO MUCH MORE THAN THEY NEED should shock us all. But this is also evidence of a gap in #HUMANITY that must be noted and accounted for. When we are in a global crisis - the rules change. #everychildmatters THAT is what #equity looks like. ZERO SPECIAL RIGHTS for anyone. #justice and #equal treatment for #ALL Ontario Human Rights Commission #indigenous City of Toronto
With an ongoing lack of safe and affordable housing options, many have turned to the TTC for shelter and warmth. We're so glad to hear that of the TTC funding renewal for LOFT M-DOT program partnership so that individuals can get connected to resources. Let's continue to advocate for more affordable housing so individuals don't need to rely on this temporary solution for a safe space. #innovation #partnership #right2housing
