This recent feedback from a student at STARBASE Robins after participating in our Idea to Pitch Program during Summer 2023 melts our hearts: "This program changed me and my skills by seeing different things in running a business, doing things, and encouraging others. I can now encourage myself to keep going when I mess up or make a mistake. This program has made me have more confidence in myself. Thank you." 🙌 This is why we do what we do - to empower young people to see their potential, build resilience, and gain the confidence to shape their own futures. I can't believe it's over. Three weeks ago, everything was stacked against us. We had no contact with schools for 2 of 3 weeks, zero registrations and double-booked venue. But the Newcastle Innovation Summit became something magical. Thanks to our partnership with Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation, we were able to support: ✅ 70 regional Aussies from 6 high schools to learn about innovation skills and entrepreneurship ✅ 15 of Newy’s leading entrepreneurs to share their stories and connect deeply with the local community ✅ the creation of 10 unique business ideas to shape a better Newcastle - from a ivy-covered green bus shelter, gamified trash collection platform and healthy fast food caravan And that was just the beginning. Here’s even more that we’re proud of: ⚡️distributing $2,500 in cash prizes, encouraging every student to amplify their voices and pursue entrepreneurial dreams. ⚡️inspiring a Yr 11 student to run their own STEM hackathon just like ours when they returned to school ⚡️helping a student struggling with ADHD to open up about his story for the first time and paid for his submission The magic wasn't just in the numbers—it was in the moments. The buzz as students pitched their ideas. The connections forged between young minds and seasoned entrepreneurs. The spark of confidence in students discovering their potential. Now, we're gearing up for our next big initiative: a 4-week program for young business owners in Newy. If you’re a local council, school, aspiring entrepreneur, please get in touch. The importance of working with high school students cannot be overstated. This formative stage is when young individuals begin to explore their interests, develop their identities, and contemplate their future paths. By introducing them to entrepreneurship, we aim to equip them with a versatile set of skills that are applicable across various aspects of life and careers. Entrepreneurship education fosters independence, innovation, and the ability to adapt to change—qualities that are essential in today’s rapidly evolving world. Who gets the money, not black people, not Indigenous, not women, not anyone at the edges or left out of building the economy and finance as usual. The money, the vast thick majority, floods to the same dudes at the center; trust funded, family backed, familiar to the money and wielding the same extractive noises and bluster. Then there is the genius of 10,000 years, the creative, innovative, resilient, artists who have had to stay alive despite every blow and extraction. These spaces are rich in culture, rich in creatives, loaded in new ways, old ways and integrated ways to transform. 🎉 Exciting news! Lehigh and the PA Microenterprise Advancement Project has been awarded a $300,000 PRIME grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration. As the lead applicant, Lehigh University SBDC is collaborating with Bucknell University, Penn Western University, Clarion University, and Shippensburg University to serve the entire state of Pennsylvania through this initiative. The grant will fund comprehensive growth-stage training, cohort programs, and other support for disadvantaged microentrepreneurs. Programs will focus on areas like veteran-owned businesses, agriculture, the trades, and new-to-export companies. “With this PRIME award of $300,000 the PA Microenterprise Advancement Project will develop comprehensive growth-stage educational and cohort-based programming to assist disadvantaged microentrepreneurs with the next stages of their business and enhance their operational capacity, market reach, and financial sustainability,” said Brett Smith, director of Lehigh's SBDC. Funding down dramatically to Black founders in 2023 across early stages - Sign the Community Development Investment Tax Credit Act and Expanding American Entrepreneurship Act before 5 PM TODAY. Peter Walker of Carta shared this on the state of funding to Black Founders -"2023 was the lowest share of fundraising for Black founders in our Carta dataset since 2020. The declines were consistent across pre-priced, Seed, and Series A rounds. One underreported thesis is that as VCs sought to reduce risk in the venture downturn of the last year or two, they funded repeat founders to an even larger degree than in prior timeframes. And Black founders are less represented among repeat founders (who would have had to found their companies in a less diverse VC ecosystem) than they are among founders as a whole." This is critical and all hands are required to advocate for Black Founders and reverse the anemic numbers around funding. The Center for American Entrepreneurship & Engine | Advocacy & Foundation are asking founders and ecosystem builders of color to sign a letter urging US Congress to pass: Community Development Investment Tax Credit Act: Boosts investment in Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs). "The legislation would create a new tax credit for private sector investors that make hashtag equity or equity equivalent investments in, or that provide long-term patient capital (i.e., loans with a minimum term of at least 10 years) to CDFIs." Expanding American Entrepreneurship Act: "The legislation would raise the cap on funds organized under a 2018 sub-category of section 3(c)(1) of the Investment Company Act of 1940 from $10 million to $50 million, and double the number of permitted investors from 250 to 500.
