Been seeing a lot of posts today about Spotify's recent round of layoffs. Also seeing numbers about their year over year losses, and it brings me back to this interview from 2018. Jack Stratton is a multi-instrumentalist and founding member of the band Vulfpeck (great listen if you haven't dove into their music). In this interview he draws an interesting albeit not perfect analogy between streaming services and a grocery store. He explains how the model essentially gives the consumer a free pass to take whatever they want from the store for a small fee every month. Thus, making an unsustainable relationship for the producers (or artists) and the store. Spotify seems to be proving that not only is their model unsustainable for the artists on the platform, but also internally. Spotify has done a great job at slighting artists by dropping royalty payments for streams, as well as 1/5th of their staff. All the best to anyone affected by the layoffs, and I hope you find yourself in a more favorable position soon. I didn't take a traditional route to gain my MSc so I can't comment on the university aspect but I do believe that the bulk of my growth has come from firstly experiencing entrepreneurship first hand by running my coaching business, and then working for different entrepreneurs over the last few years. I've learnt, and am still learning, so much from their different styles and approaches to business, my particular interest being on leadership and communication. Leaders set the tone for the culture of their businesses. When you imagine the many millions spent by students, parents, bursary sponsors every year on higher education that's where you really wonder if it's all worth it. The reality is that there are many factors that determine whether one can go without when it comes to further education. Some need it more than others, if you would think about developing countries and the quality of basic schooling in these countries. Articulacy, the availability of basic necessities like water and sanitation, transportation these are just some of the obstacles in the way of young people in poorer nations. The capacity is not quite the same, it requires something of a miracle to overcome all of that to build something without even having been at university, far from home. Familiarised with modern life and all it entails. It's hard.

This is where #apprenticeships can play such a critical role - and in England they are available at higher and degree levels. They are providing critical time in the work place where you can be coached and mentored, with time also set aside to study. It’s a useful route in for budding entrepreneurs to get both work experience and qualifications. #NAW2024
