THE FOURTH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION (4IR), INVESTING IN A NATIONAL INTERSTATE HIGH SPEED RAIL (NIHSR) SYSTEM IS CRUCIAL FOR MAINTAINING OUR NATION’S COMPETITIVENESS IN THE WORLD DURING THE 21st CENTURY. It’s positive news that the Biden administration is allocating $3 billion from the federal infrastructure budget to kickstart the creation of a new high-speed rail line connecting Los Angeles to Las Vegas. The project, spearheaded by Brightline Holdings LLC, is anticipated to create a 218-mile stretch along the Interstate I-15 corridor, linking these two major cities. While there’s no specified start date for construction, the goal of having trains running in time for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles is an ambitious and exciting target. With the necessary paperwork and planning completed, including environmental impact assessments and union labor contracts, the project seems poised to move forward after facing various challenges since its initial proposal in 2001. The Brightline West project, connecting Rancho Cucamonga and the High Desert to Las Vegas, is a high-speed rail project that aims to provide a fully electric, semi-high-speed passenger train service in the Western United States. This project is expected to bring H4 Rail Track connectivity between Southern California and Las Vegas, offering a faster and more sustainable transportation option. However, it’s important to note that the distance between Rancho Cucamonga and Las Vegas (the terminus point) is about 218 miles with its alignment 96% within the median of I-15. According with the estimated traveling time of 2hrs and 10 min., the train speed will be around 104 mph traveling on a H4 track, which sets it in the upper tier of the intercity trains. The proposed Project is a step forward in the development of High Speed Trains in the US. In related developments, Brightline had acquired 110 acres of land at South End of the Las Vegas Blvd for 65,000 sf of Brightline West terminal. #Massachusetts: A sizable $476.5 million Fair Share allocation sets the stage for these enhancements: - Key investments include $6.75 million for the Lynnway Multimodal Corridor in Lynn, designed to enhance #multimodal and safety measures. - allocation of $3 million directed toward the Inland Route's improvement spanning various central Massachusetts #municipalities. - Regional #planning agencies aren't left behind, with sums earmarked for safety action plans that employ a "data-based approach" to ameliorate roadway hazards. - the Fair Share purse supports a spectrum of initiatives, including #bridge construction, MBTA capital investments, and means-tested fare exploration for public #transit. #transportation #highway #traffic #roadway #bridges #transit #aviation #rail #jobs #newengland #engineers #engineering #design #clients #projects

The rate at which a #bridge or #road deteriorates depends not only on the materials and construction methods used but also on the climate during the structure’s life span. Extreme heat, in particular, significantly affects #transportation infrastructure. #Infrastructure will face increasing challenges as the climate changes and roads, bridges and other infrastructure age. The large number of buckling roadways and other problems this summer highlight the urgent need for resilient infrastructure to stand up to the future. #transportation #highway #traffic #roadway #bridges #transit #aviation #rail #jobs #newengland #engineers #engineering #design #clients #projects

A “climate time bomb” indeed. Thanks to Transportation For America. And, it is so tragic that leaders in this space have for YEARS been yelling about it (and writing about it - thanks Scott Shepard, AICP, LEED®AP, ). Here's the tragedy from my #ClimateInfluence messaging standpoint: we need to be much louder about the stories of states that have refused or pushed back against this in any way. We need to elevate those leaders as cutting edge and the new norm. We need to make the states being ridiculous enough to expand highways *in this time* look beyond irrelevant. Our frustration and the ensuing news coverage about how we can't believe this keeps happening isn't working. We need to "name and fame" the few, the proud, the bold who have already had a smidgeon of #politicalwill and make THEM flat out famous - through podcasts like Scott's and mine, Living Change. It's why I talked with so many U.S. mayors / local leaders for it - (and also interviewed David Miller and Lisa Helps for the Bike Talk podcast years easier during or about their #lesscar policies as mayors in Canada). Elevate stories of people in state's that pushed back and upped public transportation. Their JOY will make change. I'm here to tell you. Message x Delivery = Impact We need to get massively louder about using creative deliverers and delivery mechanisms. More strategic influencers, wiser use of #podcasts, re-packaging of #content, more creative #events and speakers. (Look there, this really got me started - and is why I am so thrilled I'll be recording a live #podcast conversation with Urban Freight Lab about #ecargobike as #lastmiledelivery at the Women In Tech Regatta here in Seattle in April. ) We've got the solutions for #lesscar and less truck cities, and political leaders in cities and states need to realize they get much better emissions reports and community love when they act COUNTER to the existing narrative of bulging highways. The ways we *communicate* about transportation matter. We keep telling the same 1950s stories. Great to see The Guardian, Streetsblog USA, TransitCenter and Transportation For America all bringing up this important fact: The $1.2T Bipartisan Infrastructure Act of 2021 simply gives State DOTs additional power of the purse, and reinforces the century-long status quo (endless highway-building). I even wrote about this same fiscal & environmental concern with State DOTs just over two years ago in my December 2021 ITS International Magazine article "Infrastructure Act falls short". Unfortunately my article has aged quite well, and its predictions were accurate... When working with Rail infrastructure, collecting data efficiently is crucial. This is why we opted to scan the corridor for our client, as they weren't sure if additional information would be needed. Now we can be certain that we are able to answer any questions which may arise as design continues. #Laserscanning #Rail #Surveying #Construction #MadiganSurveying
