We are grateful to receive an ‘A’ Grade from Law Students for Climate Accountability for the second year in a row, and to be one of only seven law firms to earn this grade in the 2024 report. As one of the first law firms to develop a practice focused on the energy transition almost 20 years ago, this accolade is core to who we are. Foley Hoag continues to be a leader in this sector and we pride ourselves in working with clients developing and deploying solutions to address the climate crisis. The 2024 Law Firm Climate Change Scorecard ranks the Vault 100 law firms according to how much fossil fuels work they have engaged in over a five-year period and also analyses how much work they do in support of clients addressing the climate crisis, drawing awareness to the indispensable role law firms play in supporting fossil fuel projects. The majority of firms received grades of "D" or "F." Read more: https://lnkd.in/eQpA7RKf Learn more about our Energy & Climate group: https://lnkd.in/eDe76xKS

The Law Students for Climate Accountability, a student coalition set up to hold the legal sector accountable for its contribution towards climate change, has urged lawyers to quit firms who don’t make the grade according to its latest scorecard ranking. Its report says hundreds of law students have joined the call for climate accountability and encourages every student to take action to hold the legal industry accountable for exacerbating climate change. If you want to work for a law firm that is committed to impactful change, then Leverets is the place for you. We’ve signed the Greener Litigation pledge, because we believe our industry needs to pay more attention to ways in which litigation can be conducted sustainably. We’re also an official partner of the Environmental Business Network, thereby playing our part in helping businesses adapt to, and benefit from, the need for a different environmental future. #greenerlitigationpledge #LawStudentsforClimateAccountability

The 2024 Scorecard from the Law Students for Climate Accountability has been released. While firms my take issue with the exact methodology and/or its conclusions, the fact that this raises awareness of the impact of legal work on the climate cannot be disputed. According to the LSCA website: “We created the LSCA Law Firm Climate Change Scorecard in order to understand the role the legal industry plays in the climate crisis more broadly. The Scorecard ranks the "Vault 100" law firms according to how much fossil fuels work they have engaged in over a five-year period. It was designed to draw awareness to the indispensable role law firms play in creating, implementing, and safeguarding fossil fuel projects, as well as protecting the people who profit off of them.” Congratulations to the firms who achieved an “A” grade: Akerman LLP, Cooley LLP, Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, Foley Hoag LLP,Schulte Roth & Zabel LLP, Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton LLP, and Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati. What could / should the legal profession be doing to help guide the fossil fuel industry toward a more sustainable (viable) long-term future? https://lnkd.in/gssDXFbv

We did a thing! 🤓💚🟢🌲🌳 Loved presenting our working paper on compensation funds for climate change related harms at the Tort Law Symposium in Brisbane, hosted by Griffith University Law School. I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with these amazing women for some time now, and I could not adore working with them more 💚 Vanessa Johnston Nia Emmanouil, PhD Together with Dr. Kim Watts and Dr Anne Kallies, we’ve combined our research interests in tort law, climate change, energy law, property law and compensation funds to explore the possibility of creating a compensation fund in this field. It was terrific to get our work out there, and receive helpful feedback on our working paper. We can’t wait to get our next article out into the world. In the meantime, check out our publications in this field while we work on our next article.
