I tend to have a healthy skepticism when it comes to new renewable energy tech, so I'm taking this new sodium ion battery with a grain of salt (pun intended) - sincerely hoping this will continue to build the path towards a more sustainable future: "Sodium-ion batteries offer several advantages over their lithium-ion counterparts: the far superior abundance, cost-effectiveness, and reduced safety risks of sodium are just a few examples. Not only has sodium been estimated to be about one thousand times more abundant than lithium, but a finished sodium-ion battery is expected to be available for as little as a third of the cost of an average lithium-ion battery." #Sustainability #SodiumIonBatteries

"A Future Made in Australia will be a future powered by batteries, which makes investing in a home-grown battery industry overwhelmingly in the national interest,” Mr Husic said. The strategy said the focus would be on helping local companies bridge the commercialisation gap and likened the investment to the building of ports, roads and railways that supported the development of traditional industries such as resources and agriculture." 🔋 ⚡ Sitting on the edge of my chair for this announcement... Hopefully "breakthrough" means breakthrough and not just boring old LFP storage batteries which China 🇨🇳 absolutely dominate and have driven to the cost floor (currently ~$57/kWh on a cell level 😱 ). IMO Breakthrough in the Australian context means: (1) Next generation Higher energy density faster charging lithium ion battery cells... using increasing % of #silicon in the anode and high #nickel content. Sicona Battery Technologies with low cost silicon metal based Silicon-Carbon anode materials and AnteoTech with next gen binders are two major local players in this space. Massive opportunity for this to drive EV mining trucks of the future plus defense and space applications. (2) Lithium sulfur batteries from the likes of Gelion (who also has a silicon anode lithium sulfur chemistry under development) and Li-S Energy (3) Aluminium ion batteries by players like Graphene Manufacturing Group Ltd and TasmanIon (4) Sodium ion batteries and associated technologies. Zaiping Guo at University of Adelaide and the team Iondrive Technologies (5) Lithium metal solid state batteries. Personally not my favourite chemistry tbh but some cool research being done by the likes of Maria Forsyth and others (don't know of any Aussie startups in this space?) (6) Other future facing startups I've forgotten or overseen (sorry!) Hysata recently submitted a response to the Senate Standing Committee on Economics regarding the Future Made in Australia 2024 Bill. Our submission outlines the critical role that electrolysers play in a Future Made in Australia, and what policy will be needed to cement this multi-billion dollar industry in Australia. Quick snapshot of our recommendations: 1. Include hydrogen electrolysers in the “clean energy manufacturing” priority sector under the National Interest Framework 2. Provide direct domestic manufacturing support for electrolysers 3.
