FASI’s research team’s hard work and dedication are the driving force behind our mission. Today, we’re featuring FASI Principal Investigator and Associate Professor at Yale School of Medicine, Noah Palm, PhD. Get to learn more about Dr. Palm and his research in learning about the causes and discovering the cures for food allergies. 1. What does your research plan aim to understand about food allergies? My lab is broadly interested in understanding how and why commensal microbes have such profound impacts on human health. We are particularly interested in uncovering the molecular connections that link commensal microbes and their human hosts, and the co-evolutionary processes that shape host-microbiota interactions. Related to food allergy, we aim to understand how commensal microbes can promote or prevent allergic sensitization and how changes in the microbiome associated with modernization may lead to increases in food allergy. 2. How will your research change or expand what we currently know? Much of our work involves developing new technologies to illuminate the so-called ‘dark matter’ of the microbiome—the millions of microbial genes and metabolites that currently lack functional annotations. By revealing new functions for microbes and metabolites, our studies expose the precise mechanisms through which indigenous microbes influence host health. 3. What interventions do you hope could potentially be developed based on your research? Our research may enable the development of microbiota-directed treatments to treat existing food allergies or, better yet, prevent allergic sensitization in the first place (e.g., by restoring ‘healthy’ microbiota compositions or functions that antagonize or redirect the allergic response). 4. What drives you to do what you do? In today's world, food allergies are becoming increasingly common—just ask any elementary school teacher! One major factor contributing to their rise is the compromised integrity of the gut barrier, allowing food particles to trigger immune responses by entering the bloodstream. But here's the good news: our gut microbiome steps in to keep those intestinal walls healthy, which can help reduce the chances of developing food allergies. And guess what? Researchers are shining a spotlight on a particular bacteria called Clostridia. They've discovered that Clostridia produces metabolites (some familiar, others still waiting to be discovered) that act like bodyguards, keeping our gut barrier safe and sound. In honor of National Celiac Awareness Day (9/13) and the upcoming first anniversary of The White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health (9/28), my 10-year-old son filed a Citizen Petition with the FDA to label Gluten as a Major Food Allergen, just like Gluten is required to be labeled in 87 other countries worldwide and in accordance with recommendations from the 2021 FAO/World Health Organization Expert Consultation on Food Allergens. This Citizen Petition is a response to President Biden's nationwide call-to-action with "White House Challenge to End Hunger and Build Healthy Communities." Labeling Gluten will reduce the treatment burden, food insecurity and diet-related disease for millions of Americans with Celiac Disease, a potentially life-threatening food allergy, auto-immune disease and digestive disease from adverse health effects that can arise following Gluten ingestion. We are respectfully requesting that the evaluation of this Citizen Petition be conducted now through the lens of President Biden’s Executive Order 14091 on “Further Advancing Racial Equity and Support for Underserved Communities Through the Federal Government.” (February 16, 2023):   “Because advancing equity requires a systematic approach to embedding fairness in decision-making processes, executive departments and agencies (agencies) must recognize and work to redress inequities in their policies and programs that serve as barriers to equal opportunity.”   According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Equity Action Plan, “advancing equity must be a central component of the decision-making framework that all agency functions are routed through.”   The Celiac community represents an underserved community which shares a particular characteristic including a chronic disability as per the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals and a potentially life-threatening and life-debilitating food allergy to eating Gluten with numerous adverse health consequences. #celiac #foodlabels #glutenallergy #foodallery #FDA #WHO #FAO #HHS #POTUS, #WHConfHungerHealth #WhiteHouse #HHSEquityActionTeam #FALCPA #ExecutiveOrder #Biden #ADA #humanfoodsprogram #disability #WhenFoodisPoison #SecBecerra #FDACommissioner #humanrights #civilrights

We’re thrilled to announce our partnership with ObvioHealth to launch an innovative clinical study that will allow us to assess how early allergen introduction impacts infant food allergies and associated healthcare costs. The Early Allergen System Experience (EASE) trial will assess if using our early allergen introduction products can reduce two key barriers when it comes to introducing allergens to infants: 1) early introduction and sustained feeding of food allergens is burdensome for parents, and 2) it can also be costly, especially for low-income families. We look forward to learning the results from this study and hopefully help in closing a socioeconomic gap in allergen introduction. Purpose of review: The aim of the article is to critically appraise the most relevant studies in the rapidly advancing field of food allergy prevention. Recent findings: Epidemiologic studies identified atopic dermatitis as a strong risk factor for food allergy, with mounting evidence for impaired skin barrier and cutaneous inflammation in the pathogenesis. Additional risk factors include a family history of atopy, the timing of allergenic food introduction into the infant's diet, dietary diversity, vitamin D, and environmental factors, such as dog ownership. Early introduction of allergenic foods (such as peanut) into the infant diet was shown to significantly reduce the risk of food allergy in infants with risk factors, whereas studies targeting skin barrier function have produced conflicting results. Cumulative evidence supports dietary diversity during pregnancy, breastfeeding, infancy, and early childhood. Summary: A variety of interventions have been evaluated for the prevention of atopic dermatitis and food allergy, often producing conflicting results. At present, official guidelines encourage breastfeeding and early allergenic food introduction for infants at risk for food allergy, with an emphasis on dietary diversity, fruits, vegetables, fish, and food sources of vitamin D during pregnancy, lactation, and early life for all infants. In regards to food allergy research, I've seen some fascinating studies as of late. However, this one out of Italy certainly takes the cake – for the longest time it's been thought that the cause of food allergies might stem from our gut microbiome. Now, with the addition of this research, we can see how this intricate part of our body's ecosystem interacts with our immune response, creating the opportunity for these conditions to form. "These diseases occur due to hypersensitivity reactions where the immune system abnormally responds to allergens. Gut microbiota influences immune responses, with early microbial exposure benefiting immune development. The "hygiene hypothesis" posits that early infections protect against allergies, but sanitized lifestyles can disrupt this. While breastfeeding promotes healthy infant gut microbiota, factors like birth methods and antibiotic use can alter it. 📢 For the first post of the 🅼🅰🆈 🅸🆂🆂🆄🅴 we present you the comprehensive review article signed by Joana Filipe Ribeiro and 𝗖𝗹á𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗮 𝗣𝗲𝗱𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗮. It sheds light on the potential of #probiotics and #prebiotics as promising therapeutic interventions in the management of #food allergy. This article highlights the 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗯𝗶𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 in the management of #cow's milk allergy (CMA) and #peanut oral #immunotherapy (OI). Extensively 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮 supplemented with 𝘓𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘶𝘴 𝘙𝘩𝘢𝘮𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘶𝘴 GG has also shown positive outcomes in: ✅ accelerating tolerance acquisition; ✅ alleviating gastrointestinal symptoms; ✅ preventing other allergic manifestations in CMA. Furthermore, the review emphasizes the 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 with 𝘓𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘶𝘴 𝘙𝘩𝘢𝘮𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘶𝘴 CGMCC 1.3724 in inducing sustained desensitization in peanut OI. However, the use of probiotics for the prevention of food allergy 𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗿𝗼𝗯𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, while the use of #oligosaccharides from #breast milk in early infancy appears to be beneficial for preventing atopic #dermatitis, food allergy and #asthma. These findings provide important insights for further research and clinical applications, highlighting the potential of probiotics and prebiotics in preventing and managing food allergies. Further studies are needed to determine the optimal probiotic type, dosage, and duration of supplementation.

Food allergies arise in part because of reduced gut barrier integrity, which gives food molecules access to the circulatory system, where they trigger the immune system. But did you know that our gut wall can be strengthened or weakened depending on the types of microbes present in our microbiome? In a recent study out of the University of Chicago, researchers found that a beneficial bacteria called Clostridia could strengthen the gut wall in a way likely to reduce the risk of developing food allergies.
