We've raised a 350-metre-long section of State Highway 1 just south of Oamaru by one metre to reduce closures caused by flooding near Kakanui River. Changing weather patterns mean the river floods more often – approximately every three to five years – which has previously led to SH1 closing for up to two days. These closures caused significant disruption for people travelling between Canterbury and Otago, with no straightforward detour possible. Now, the regular three to five yearly flooding won't affect SH1, and the road should be able to avoid flooding in a one in 50-year flood. We'd expected work on this section of SH1 to take until mid-June to complete but roadworkers finished up in late May. Thanks to the roadworkers for their tremendous work – we were able to keep disruption to people's travel to a minimum by only reducing the road to a single lane when necessary.
