Every family in Ohio should be able to afford healthy, nutritious food, have safe and stable housing, access to health care and all the other elements of a good life. The bipartisan Child Tax Credit expansion in the tax bill currently in negotiations has the potential to lift nearly 446,000 Ohio children out of poverty. We saw the impact that the CTC had during the pandemic to support families in affording basic necessities like rent, groceries, utilities, and even paying down credit. The Child Tax Credit is proof that when parents have more financial and emotional stability, kids and families thrive.

📢 Nearly four in ten children are now living in poverty across the North West – with this figure rising to one in two in the worst-hit constituencies. For many this means being excluded from activities like school trips and days out, not having clothes that fit them, going to school hungry, and in some cases sharing a bed or sleeping on the floor. 🗨 End Child Poverty Coalition Manager Rachel Walters said: “Whoever wins the election needs to urgently get a grip on child poverty. Rising costs and stalling wages are making it impossible for families to make ends meet. "We need a social security system that’s fit for the 21st Century. One that ensures all children can flourish, instead of one that pushes families into poverty, with its two-child limit to benefit payments. How can we stand for even one child living in poverty? The expanded Child Tax Credit provided historic support for families living in poverty, helping them afford basic needs like food, clothing, and housing. Unfortunately, this policy was fleeting. Only six months after the first payment went out, it abruptly ended, bringing families right back to where they started. A permanent expansion of the CTC would help families get back on their feet and bring us one step closer to an economy that works for everyone. Implementing a portfolio of programs and policies to reduce intergenerational poverty would yield a high payoff for children and the entire nation. Our report examines the key drivers of intergenerational poverty in the U.S. and concludes that evidence-based policies—such as increasing K-12 spending for underfunded districts, expanding occupational training programs, increasing access to the Medicaid program, and expanding the earned income tax credit—appear likely to lessen the chances that children living in poverty will experience poverty as adults. Dallas has more than a 33,600 unit gap in housing according to the Child Poverty Action Lab (CPAL) . Without action, this gap will grow to 83,500 units by 2030. Dallas can expect to leverage $10 for every $1 of bond funding invested into housing, but we have to invest $200M now before it is too late.
