Schools have until Sunday, June 30, to apply for the Community Eligibility Provision for the 2024–2025 school year. The Community Eligibility Provision, commonly referred to as CEP, allows high-need schools to offer school breakfast and lunch at no charge to all students. Starting next school year, any school, group of schools, or school district with an Identified Student Percentage above 25 percent — the percentage of students eligible for free school meals without a household application — is eligible to participate in CEP. Find the top 5 reasons to Adopt Community Eligibility in a blog by FRAC's Erin Hysom. https://lnkd.in/eHwkC-gV

Baltimore City Public Schools is the only exception to Maryland's system of county-based school districts. It's carved right out of the middle of Baltimore County Public Schools. In school year 19-20, City Schools had about 1.25x the dollars per pupil as Baltimore County Public Schools, but about 3x the poverty rate. Ask any math teacher (or edu researcher) - those numbers don't add up. We stand with NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. and Alaizah Koorji- Maryland must provide Baltimore City Schools students the funding they deserve. We should also rethink the way district lines concentrate poverty in the first place - in Baltimore and in districts around the country.
For generations of Baltimore City Public Schools children, obtaining an adequate education remains out of reach, despite the Maryland Constitution’s guarantee that each student has a right to a “thorough and efficient” public education. The funding deficit exacerbates other disparities that make it harder for BCPS students of color to learn. Our latest original content dives into the history of underfunding and demands that state leaders ensure these schools are properly funded so all students can thrive. https://lnkd.in/ebvhbsTg

Public schools are being forgotten. They are the foundation, and the reason for our success as a country. Our country is failing because our public schools are being de-funded, and driven into failure. We must re-invent our schools. They must be the best in the world. We must not allow the genius of public education to be obliterated by those who want privately owned schools that will cater to some students while ignoring the rest. We already see the results of schools that are not revered...apathy disengagement, and tragically soulless. We need to gather together and rebuild our schools. There is one thing I can tell you about public schools when done correctly, they become the heart of communities, not the decline.

So far dozens of Marylanders, from the Lower Eastern Shore to western Frederick County and from the Baltimore-area to the DMV, have taken action using the advocacy tool below to tell our state legislators the millions in proposed budget cuts to community colleges are absolutely unacceptable. If you care about quality, accessible, affordable higher education, take action now. There's no more prudent budget allocation the Maryland General Assembly can make than toward community colleges. We know how to put those dollars to work for students and stakeholders, and we serve our local communities with commitment and excellence. https://lnkd.in/e5iU5iX4
