It's a huge task, and an important part of that is bringing the voices of food banks & pantries to the table. FOOD BANKS( A History and Importance) ....... Food banks originated in the United States in the late 1960s. The concept was pioneered by John van Hengel, who started the first food bank, the St. Mary's Food Bank, in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1967. Van Hengel aimed to address food insecurity by redistributing surplus food to those in need, creating a model that would spread across the country and beyond. Food banks became more formalized and widespread in the 1980s. The Second Harvest Network (now known as Feeding America) was established in 1982 to coordinate and expand the food bank network. This organization played a critical role in standardizing operations and scaling up efforts to address hunger. Food banks are crucial to the economy for several reasons: 1.Reducing Waste: They help mitigate food waste by redistributing surplus food that might otherwise go to landfills. 2.Supporting Low-Income Families: They provide a safety net for families facing economic hardship, helping to reduce poverty-related stress and health issues. 3.Economic Efficiency: By pooling resources and donations, food banks can distribute food more efficiently than individuals or smaller organizations working independently. Great to speak with Newsday Media Group about Island Harvest Food Bank’s record year of emergency food distribution. During our last fiscal year (July 2023 - June 2024), we provided approximately 18.7 million pounds of emergency food to our network of 300 member agencies and directly to our neighbors in need. This is a record amount of food, more than we provided any year during the pandemic, and nearly double from 2019. The need for emergency food is greater now than ever before.
