🐷 Have you considered the narrative of an Irish pig delivering a Ted Talk? I've envisioned how it might unfold. The pig would likely struggle onto the stage with impaired legs. Their tale may begin with the bleak times in their past, where sunlight, nature, and love felt like distant fantasies. They might recount the cuts and infections on their body to illustrate the hardships, linking these to moments of significance, ultimately justifying their struggles. However, there's a flaw in this narrative, isn't there? Pigs cannot present Ted Talks. They don't live long enough to share their stories. Despite this, the narrative can end positively. 🎉 Very excited to announce that our article on the Hong Kong feral cattle, “Sex and dominance status affect allogrooming in free-ranging feral cattle”, is published today in Animal Behaviour, with Alan McElligott, Kate Flay, Tania Perroux, and Wai Yan Chan 🥳 We recorded dominance interactions and allogrooming events in a mixed-sex herd of adult feral cattle in Hong Kong, and investigated the relationships between sex, dominance and licking behaviour. We found a linear and stable hierarchy, with 22 males and 33 females. High-ranking females received more allogrooming from the rest of the herd, and also exchanged preferential grooming between themselves. Males groomed females more than they groomed other males, but females groomed everyone equally. Males were also more dominant than females, but not all females were subordinate to all males! 🐮 Although there are over a billion cattle on the planet, there are very few feral populations - studying their behaviour will help us to understand how and why these kinds of behaviours evolved. At present, Ukraine represents the second largest egg producer after France, and has the fourth largest poultry sector. Agricultural products account for 41% of Ukraine’s exports, with animal products estimated to make up almost a third of this, most of which are poultry and eggs. Yet, current #animalwelfare standards in Ukraine fall below current EU standards. Complete the SIC's Sheep Scab byelaw consultation now and help the Shetland Animal Health Scheme keep Shetland scab free. The deadline for responses to the consultation is Tuesday 6th February 2024 - https://lnkd.in/eWsXsPTz It will take 3 minutes of your time and help strengthen the case for proper controls on dipping imported sheep to prevent scab coming into Shetland. Crofters, farmers and anyone with sheep in Shetland are encouraged to respond to the consultation, ahead of proposed changes to the legislation. The changes are deemed necessary in response to increased risk of introduction of sheep scab to Shetland, with rising cases of sheep scab in the rest of the UK.

Recently, the head of state signed into law the Animal Feeds Bill, 2023. "The Bill seeks to provide legislative framework for the operationalization of the animal feeds policy by regulating the production, importation, exportation and marking of animal feeds and by establishing the animal feeds committee to regulate the production, importation, exportation and marking of animal feeds." according to the parliamentary web. What will this mean for the small scale farmers? the other farmers? What are the balances stroke in order to ensure the multiple purposes (especially #nature based feeds ) are well catered for to avoid a broken nature -feeds system?
