🌍🚜 In the rolling fields of Europe, a quiet crisis is unfolding. Our reliance on pesticides in agriculture is contributing to the decline of biodiversity and threatening food security. Annemarie Botzki from foodwatch Deutschland sheds light on this urgent issue and presents a visionary solution to transition European farms away from pesticides, crop by crop. According to the French National Centre for Scientific Research, Europe has lost 800 million birds since 1980 due to increased use of fertilizers and pesticides. This alarming trend extends to essential pollinators like bees and butterflies, crucial for crop survival. The European Commission has highlighted the risks of our pesticide-reliant model, warning of reduced biodiversity and degraded soil health. Despite commitments to the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the 1993 Convention on Biological Diversity, the EU's pesticide use has increased since the 1990s. But there is hope. By prioritizing crops like wheat and maize, which can be grown without pesticides through simple measures like crop rotation and tillage, we can significantly reduce pesticide use. An EU-wide pesticide tax, scaled by toxicity, could further discourage harmful chemical use. The potential for change is real and already happening. Switzerland’s Migros supermarket, Germany’s Maurer Bakery, and France’s Brocéliande cooperative are pioneering pesticide-free farming. It’s time for Europe to lead the way, starting with grains, towards a sustainable, pesticide-free future. 📖 Read Annemarie's full op-ed and our comprehensive report on pesticide-free farming: https://lnkd.in/d6MYXRJA #SustainableAgriculture #Biodiversity #FoodSecurity #PesticideFree
