Dick Fosbury and the most successful flop of all times What a privilege to be in Paris during these phenomenal #JOPARIS2024! While attending an athletics event in the #StadedeFrance, I reflect on the legacy of #DickFosbury (1947-2023) and his gold medal in the high jump in Mexico 1968 Olympic games. Fosbury pioneered a revolutionary technique of high jump that allowed him to win the gold medal and that was totally different from the prevalent straddle technique of that time. At start, it was ironically called “the Fosbury flop” looking at the way he landed on his back, but it was all but a flop! Over time, most athletes adopted and improved his technique that is since then prevalent in the high jump. For that reason, #DickFosbury is considered one of the most influential athletes of all times. What I find amazing is how he developed this revolutionary technique during his college years: he found lots of coaches advising him to jump “the orthodox way” and focusing on teaching him the straddle technique. He kept practising both ways, until the day that results made clear that he performed better using his own style. His coach Berny Wagner gave up trying to correct him and began helping him to refine his technique. The path to the Olympic gold medal was cleared and the biggest revolution in high jump had just started. Just having a deep thought on how the EPL ended with Man City winning the cup for the fourth time in a row. With Arsenal chasing relentlessly, yet having not won in 20 years, it’s a stark reminder that in life, we must pay the price in full to achieve greatness and be celebrated. At some point at the end of the season, I was thinking 🤔 like can't Man City coach intentionally allow Arsenal to win the league, having trained Arsenal's coach some years back? But success isn't handed over freely; it requires unwavering dedication, relentless effort, and the willingness to overcome countless obstacles. Man City's triumph is a testament to their hard work, strategic planning, and consistency. Similarly, Arsenal's journey, filled with ups and downs, teaches us the importance of persistence and resilience. In our own lives, we must embrace these principles. To win and be celebrated, we must commit fully, strive continuously, and never give up. This weekend was the Kentucky Derby, and on the historic 150th running of this race, Mystik Dan delivered a breath-taking win, beating second place Sierra Leone and third place Forever Young in the first three horse photo finish since 1947 ended in a 3-horse photo finish. This year's race marks a unique milestone with the 150th running of the Derby — the first race took place back in 1875. There are lots of interesting facts about the Derby, with the drink of the race is the Mint Julep, made with Woodford Reserve as the official bourbon for the race. There wasn’t an official trophy for the race for almost 50 years, the first race was in 1875 and the trophy was created in 1924. To this day the Kentucky Derby trophy is one of the only solid gold trophies in the United States. The fastest Kentucky Derby was run by Secretariat in 1973 (1:59.40). The slowest winning time was run by Kingman in 1891 (2:52.25 for the mile and a half). There have been three fillies to win the race. I love the Kentucky Derby not only because it’s exciting, but also because it always provides important leadership lessons. Here are a few from the 2024 race: You can win against all odds. You just never know. You can’t stop until the end. An interesting report today published by British Future and Spirit of 2012 on the role football can play in creating social cohesion in diverse communities, through a common love of football. Do you have any examples you can share of sports doing precisely that? Can sport be a leader in building cohesion and cultural competence in local communities ?

Great to see this research. Sport really can be a leader in society to help build cultural competence, social cohesion through our common love for sport. Although this uses the example of football, it can apply in other settings. I have the privilege of being involved at Edinburgh South Cricket Club, where the club's membership includes 17 different nationalities, with a diverse range of ethnicities, religions, cultural identities and beliefs - but one common thing unites us, a shared love of cricket. Cricket is a game that requires people to spend vast amounts of time together on the field, working through situations together as a team to achieve a result. Through simply being around many others with different cultural experiences and identities, I've learnt so much. Most importantly, we've embraced the multiple cultural identities and beliefs as our strength, finding space to learn about and support each other. Less 'integration into a culture' and more 'evolution of our culture together'. Sport really can be a leader in society for bringing people together. The proposed change to the standard method kicks out some very interesting figures locally! North Warwickshire sees a whopping 133% increase, Stratford on Avon an equally whopping 99%, with Warwick DC a less whopping but still significant 65%. Rugby Borough’s requirement increases by 22%. These increases will have implications for emerging plans and the Green Belt. The new(ish) Northants authorities are looking at increases of 11% (North) and 22% (West), this must therefore influence the allocations in their respective emerging plans. Elsewhere: in Buckinghamshire the annual target increases by 42% - there is a call for sites consultation running until June next year and, in Cherwell, a 55% increase.
