It really should come as no surprise that more and more women are tapping into their entrepreneurial spirit and starting their own businesses. For some, this means leaving jobs in their field to start their own companies. For others, it means taking on a "side hustle" to help make ends. There are many things about self-employment that are attractive to women. For those who are mothers, the thought of having control over their schedules is incredibly appealing as it allows them the opportunity to be there for their kids. Having the flexibility to set their own working hours allows them to keep their family as their top priority while also having a career. The rise of online and virtual businesses has made it easier to start up a business. Not only are there more opportunities available now but since they are virtual, getting started is no longer cost-prohibitive. At YES, many of our VA's started their businesses with only a laptop, a cell phone, and a reliable internet connection. Using these three things, they have been able to create a business that allows them to provide for their families. I recently had a strategic partner tell me, ‘Well, I’m worried because I don’t want you and Amber Hamilton (she/her) working for free.’ I thanked him, and he responded, ‘No, don’t thank me. This should be the expectation.’ And he’s right. It should be. But unfortunately, it hasn’t been. Here’s why: 1. As a startup, we’ve been in our freemium and paid beta phase for the last 7 months, working hard to prove our concept—and we’ve definitely succeeded. But we needed people to give us a chance (despite the decades of experience we bring to the table) 2. As women, we’re often asked to give away our expertise and time for free. This isn’t just anecdotal; it’s a documented trend. Look it up if you disagree. This is basically expected at this point. We ask about budget and they go 👀 3. Similarly, women face pushback when it comes to pricing our services. We’re expected to charge less and work more, which is a systemic issue. We recently had someone question our hourly rate saying “I don’t know how you came up with that number” easy - years of experience and knowing our own value. I shared this with him and said, ‘No, I will thank you because you could have perpetuated a system that I’ve come to expect, but you’re choosing not to. Thank you.’ It’s going to take more than the women fighting back. It’s going to take our allys moving forward with it as well. Did you know that International Women's Day is a GIANT holiday in Eastern Europe? It's a national holiday in some countries where people get the day off from work! After I'm done calling all the women in my family, I want to take a sec and recognize what it means to be a woman in tech these days (whether founder, exec, investor, etc). We're often the only woman in a room full of dudes. We get invited to many "Women in Tech" breakfasts that are cringe, and we've been on so many panels it's incredible there aren't more women in tech and entrepreneurship. Female founders only get 2% of the VC dollars and yet we somehow manage all the challenges of founder life in spite of insane odds. Female investors make up about 10% of VCs. Here are some female founders, VCs and execs who inspire me every day: - Sonia Sahney Nagar- incredible VC, one of the smartest consumer investors around - Samara Mejia Hernandez- a trailblazing GP at her own fund, investing in incredible companies through Chingona Ventures - Erica Bethe Levin- serial entrepreneur bringing families exposure to allergens and international foods through Globowl - Denzil Eden - a cheerful and resilient CEO and AI entrepreneur building smarty.ai (an AI assistant!) - Katie Shea - power connector, power VC - Nikita Miller- brilliant, kind and a product powerhouse - Kristen Habacht- keeping it real, focusing on revenue, being a great human - Maggie Adhami-Boynton- making me spend too much money on her addictive app ShopThing - Maria Christopoulos Katris- building Built In for over a decade, showing how persistence pays off - Leah Ryder - living that corporate exec life and making it look fun - Archana Agrawal - paving the way for the rest of us - Coco Meers- for inspiring everyone in every season of life - Amanda Lannert - for being supportive and unapologetic - Meghan Doyle - for helping so many new moms via Partum Health - Nataly Kelly- inspiring us to think globally - Alyssa Jaffee- investing in healthtech to make women's lives better I'm sure there are a million others I'm missing. Despite the incredible strides made—with women founding 49% of new startups in 2022—the stark reality remains: only 2.5% of startups boast solely female founders, and since 2016, women-founded ventures have received only 4.4% of venture capital backing. It's a journey filled with highs and lows. This is what you need to known- 𝟭. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Being a young woman in the tech world means constantly proving ourselves. It's not just about our skills; it's about breaking stereotypes and earning respect in a male-dominated field. Sometimes, it feels like we're fighting an uphill battle to get the recognition we deserve. ✔️ 𝟮. 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗼𝘂𝗯𝘁 Ever heard of imposter syndrome? It's that nagging voice in our heads that tells us we're not good enough. We often wrestle with self-doubt and question whether we belong in this space. But let me tell you – we absolutely do. 𝟯. 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 Balancing work and personal life can be tough. We pour our hearts into our businesses, sometimes at the expense of our own well-being. We need to take time for ourselves, set boundaries, and prioritize self-care to avoid burnout. 🥤 𝟰. 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗶𝗮𝘀 Sadly, gender bias is still a reality in tech. We encounter everything from subtle prejudices to outright discrimination. But we're not backing down. We're standing up for ourselves and fighting for equality in the workplace. 𝟱. 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 Surrounding ourselves with fellow entrepreneurs who understand our struggles and mentors who uplift us can make all the difference.
