Were you taught disability history in school? From war to workers rights, disability is woven into every piece of our history, which makes me wonder why I never learned about it until after college. PS: this article is very good and you should read it.

Today, May 17, 1954, marks a significant milestone in the fight for equal educational opportunities. Brown v. Board of Education, believed to be the first major court case to impact special education, ruled that racial segregation in schools violated the principle of equal educational opportunity. This landmark decision not only transformed the educational landscape but also served as a catalyst for the modern Civil Rights Movement. 🎉 Happy National Disability Independence Day! 🎉 Today, we celebrate the rights and independence of people with disabilities and commemorate the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990. The ADA ensures access to public establishments, transportation, communication, and government services, prohibiting discrimination based on disabilities. Did you know? One in four adults in the U.S. has a disability (CDC). Three out of four people with disabilities experience some form of abuse (NCADV). People with disabilities are 4-10 times more likely to be victimized than those without disabilities (CDC). Children with disabilities are 4 times more likely to experience abuse (BBC). Disabilities can affect mobility, hearing, vision, cognition, communication, and mental health, creating opportunities for abusers to exploit. These challenges may prevent some victims from seeking support or recognizing the abuse they experience. Additionally, domestic violence can cause disabilities through physical injury or mental health issues. This legislation has played a crucial role in promoting accessibility for people with disabilities, but there is still more work to do. The poverty rate for Black adults with disabilities is nearly 40%—an economic disparity that severely limits access to secure housing and quality healthcare, including necessary disability-related services. By embracing disability justice, we commit to dismantling the systems that devalue disabled lives. Disability Justice calls us to recognize that ableism is intertwined with other forms of oppression, shaping our ideas of worth and belonging. Understanding this is crucial for addressing the often-overlooked erasure of Black disabled people in broader disability and social justice movements. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law 34 years ago today, July 26. This historic civil rights law protects the rights of people with disabilities. The Center for Disability Inclusion (CDI), a CMF partner organization, shares several resources to help advance disability inclusion in the workplace, mental health and support business strategies. Explore the Resources: https://lnkd.in/gWbktr_2 Several CMF members and CMF have signed the Disability Inclusion Pledge, which was developed by the Presidents’ Council of the Disability & Philanthropy Forum to advance disability inclusion across the philanthropic sector. Foundations and philanthropy-serving organizations that have signed the pledge will commit to advancing systemic change within their organizations regarding disability inclusion. July is Disability Pride Month! If you didn't know, now you know. 🙂 The "simple" act of creating the graphic for this post has already opened my eyes to how important intentionality is when it comes to accessibility. Like, I had no idea it was even possible to add alt text to a social media image until last week. It never occurred to me that using all lowercase in a multi-word hashtag impacts a screen-reading program's ability to dictate it accurately. (In case you're curious, ThisKindOfTyping is called Pascal case, and it's the accessibility-friendly way to hashtag.) All I had to do to learn these things was Google "What makes a social media post more accessible," but I'd never done it before. All that is to say... If you're able to do so, July is a great time to inject more thoughtful accessibility into your regular habits! 💙

As a former special education teacher, I witnessed firsthand my students' strength, resilience, and brilliance. They constantly defied expectations and inspired me every day.
