How do I do less operational stuff, so I can focus on the strategic? Do you really want to or are you making up excuses? Over the last 15+ years, I’ve seen executives in companies of all sizes struggle to free themselves from the operational. But I think it’s an even trickier question for startup leaders, because they typically don’t have a big or senior enough team that they can effectively leverage. Also, because the operational is strategic in the first stages of the company. Still, there are ways out of it and you can be more or less swamped in the “tasks mud”, depending on your mindset. To find out whether you really want to free up mental space for the strategic stuff or are just making up excuses, ask yourself these 4 questions: → Are you determined to get leverage? There is a moment of breakthrough where you realize you cannot do everything in your team, your area, your company any more. Maybe it started that way, but in order to scale, you need other people to pick up part of the work. It is surprising how long it can take to assimilate that. → Are you comfortable with the new? Doing what you do best is comfortable, learning new things isn’t. Do you actually feel comfortable with facing that blank page and not knowing where to start for a while? Or are you cracking numbers “because someone needs to do this” so you can avoid the discomfort? → Do you know where you add most value and focus on that? As the CEO, or the CxO or the team leader, you should do the things only you can do. Your time is limited. If you don’t spend it where it adds most value, you are leaving value on the table. → Do you have the patience to delegate? Delegating takes time and sometimes involves transferring knowledge or skills to another person. It’s a short-term investment for long-term freedom to focus on what matters. Does this resonate?
